Hi all,

A female friend of mine wants to join the police force and I thought I'd ask here knowing we have a few serving police here.

It'll be West Mercia that she will be applying for when they are recruiting.

Just after general info, or anything specific on areas you work. Things to watch out for, females in the police etc.

Any police related blogs out there worth reading?

Just because you get through it all and are just waiting for a start date does not mean you have a job.

Yeah, we've heard this already. People getting through the recruitment process and waiting and waiting :(

Tell her to become a stripper, same uniform better money.

More useful too in my experience of wpcs

Typical pointless GD responses. All we were missing was pasty smashing and it would have been spot on.

After serious responses here.

Buy her a book on law, there's one out there specifically for beat officers. Nothing worse than an officer that's taught protocols. If she puts in her own leg work into the law she wishes to uphold she'll be a better officer if she is successful.

Nice one, i'll have a look for it :)

She will not get into west mercia without being a special for that force, so that's a good start. Where abouts in the force area?

My response was serious. Every one I've ever encountered has been a waste of a perfectly good uniform. Including the one who made the decision to try and prosecute me for driving whilst on a mobile phone when I wasn't. Which after my solicitor and myself proved her to be a liar had the judge comment that she'd brought the police force in to disrepute.
Oh and the one that pulled me over for having a brake light out when the car she was in had a front light out when they are required to check their vehicles before use.
Oh and the two that left my step dad to deal with a violent man armed with a machete outside a cinema in Hampstead whilst they 'crowd controlled'. Both of whom were later reprimanded for endangering his life. He received a commendation for that one.
Oh and the one who pepper sprayed him recently whilst he was pinning down a violent drunk on a bus in Newcastle. That one even made it into the papers!

Would you like more examples? I have many.

You expect a serious response here? You must be on the wrong forum

That is typical for most forces now, they only recruit externally when they have to. Hampshire have only been recruiting out of specials for the last year or so.

A mate of mine joined the police force, he must be one of those perceptive ones because not so long ago his next door neighbours were uncovered as a massive weed factory.

His thoughts on it were "I thought it was odd they vaccumed at 3am"

I'd say join the Specials first - not only does it give you/them an idea if they will actually enjoy the job but it should make it a bit easier.

Though it can take up to two years just to join the specials, with the process restarting once you apply to the regulars... so depends on how much of a rush you're in....

There's quite a big police application thread (here)

I'd also send her to the Official Police recruitment website (here), which will explain the job and the core competencies that they look for.

Then there's the UK Police Online forum (here) which is really good at providing help for the application stages and is full of people applying, which is great because every aspect is covered and you can often find other people in similar situations, on the same in-take.

:)

I'd back up the suggestion to join the Specials. Not only is it almost mandatory with some Forces prior to becoming a regular, it also gives a good indication if you'll enjoy the job. I did it and it put me off joining the regulars completely. The Job is more like babysitting than policing. As a thank you they'll stab you in the back at the first opportunity.

It's also worth noting that many forces require you to have a policing qualification before you can apply (PLC, CKP or other depending where you are), which as a special you can do at a reduced rate or free. This is usually a few hundred quid to start.
