Was toooodling back from london yesterday. sitting at roughly 80/85mph. (child killer !!!oneoneoneo1111110)

when i noticed there was a cop up on one of the little layby things with a hand held device shooting the oncoming traffic.

how do these work?? i assumed that the hand held devices didnt take photo's. i guess they do now??

had someone flying past me as i spotted the cop.
if i get a ticket its my fault not asking about that. just wondering on how the gun works

They may have been training on its usage as if they wanted to give you a fine they would have needed to pursue and stop you. I didn't realise they still used them anymore though as they usually just follow vehicles to get their average speed from the cars on board systems.

The hand helds use a laser and are not very accurate if not used properly, and do not take photographs as far as I'm aware. Probably just gauging traffic speed or a training exercise.

They would've stopped you up the road if they were going to. Laser guns are normally used in conjunction with another unit further up the road which then pulls you over when the operator rings ahead pointing you out.

You won't get a ticket for 80-85 in those circumstances.

oh they do

i was caught at 107 by a plod sat parked up in the dark with his lights off. Was about midnight at the time so i never even saw him !

however, as has already been said. The hand held device is a speed mesauring device only. They have to pursue you and issue a ticket

at an indicated 80-85 you were probably doing a laser indicated 80 so he left you alone. Most plod will go after the 90mph +ers like i was that night.

Also if someone was 'flying past you' at the time, then they will most likely have tried to catch him, rather than you.

I've only ever seen the hand-held guns used in 20 or 30mph zones.

well there was just the one female cop with her laser. now other units down the road or anything. all seemed abit weird really.

ignore the above comments

West yorkshire police do this a lot. Park a traffic cop on a motorway police ramp and sit with the radar gun pointing up the motorway. Wait for somebody doing 90 + to fly by, then chase after them and pull them over.

They can operate at speeds above 1km, so by the time you've seen the copper he's got your speed ages back.

She will have been waiting to catch somebody, but you were only doing 80 and a small fry so she ignored you. Ive been told by about 4 separate coppers, that unless they're having a bad day or on some sort of mission (blue car, red car they play ) they wont pull you unless your an indicated 90 or above. Obviously its not a hard fast rule of 89 and you get off. But the copper who pulled me over told me to keep it under 85 and id be fine. And sure enough, so were you :)

they play snooker a lot dont then.

red car, then a colour. getting points. highest scorer doesnt pay for drinks at the pub that night? :D

yeah one of the above 4 coppers i mentioned told me they played this sometimes when pulling cars over.

They usually stop you I think. And they aren't that interested in people doing 80 on motorways, from what i've heard.

Most forces will stop you after getting the laser reading.
They used to be able to just write down the speed and registration number, but home office guidelines now say that the person should be stopped.

I wouldnt worry about going 80/85, there are much bigger fish to catch.
