POlitically correct response to a stutter

There are 2 main types of stammer, an overt stammer e.g. were sounds are repeated , prolongation of sounds or blocking where a stammerer cannot get articulate the word.

Also you can have a covert stammer, this is were a stammerer will change or substitute words he or she thinks he will stammer on for words they feel they speak. I know a few covert stammerers and it is very difficult for them because they are continually thinking ahead when they speak, trying to avoid feared words, and it is mentally very tiring.

I am an overt stammerer.

I am a covert stamerer. I am quite good at it too. Hardly anyone apart from my missus and family know I stutter. You're right though, it is very tiring constantly thinking ahead.

I'm almost a covert stammerer, the rest of the time I'm a blocking stammerer. I generally only have difficulty when I want to ask somebody a question, usually when I have thought about something I want to ask and its not part of the flow of the conversation. It's not very noticeable because if don't ask the question, the person I'm speaking to won't be any the wiser. If I start to force the question out it becomes noticeable.

I find the more I speak the less frequently I stammer so its generally better for me to be more talkative but over the years stammering has stunted me socially so I'm never going to be the life of the party.

To answer the original question, I would sooner they just let me finish if i'm having difficulty.

You're patient and wait for them to finish :/

It's just plain rude if you interrupt them, never mind if they have a stutter

This!!

My brother had a stutter (has had training to over come it) and the worst thing you could do would be to finish what he was trying to say, would make him very angry as it is RUDE!

When it comes to situations like these there are two kinds of people.
The ones who understand their position and keep jovial about it the best they can. The others who get in a complete strop.

Of course, severity of the condition in this thread is arbitrary, I've only met one person who stutters at a place I worked and they had extreme difficulty finishing some words and would even gesture you to try and complete.
It annoys me when people decide something is right/wrong based on their personal opinions instead of just understanding that it's different for every individual, especially when there is no normal convention for it.

If i'm around friends I don't mind them finishing off a word, we both know what i'm trying to say and it's pointless me trying to force it out.

I have gotten very good at covert stammering, it's at the point now where people don't know I have one unless I point it out. I've always had a problem though when someone asks me for my name and i'm not expecting it, I genuinely can't say it! Blooming annoying sometimes. I'm always worse when im nervous or around new people but I cope with it well enough.

As for strangers finishing off a word..... If i've been trying for 5-10 seconds holy moley just put me out of my misery, but don't jump straight in as soon as I stumble.
