Which one best describes you?..

  1. I upgrade components frequently enough such that they still have a fair amount of their original value.
  2. I sell the components, but they are 'old tech' now so I often sell them for far less than I originally bought them for.
  3. I build second hand machines from old parts for personal use or family.
  4. I build second hand machines from old parts and sell them as complete PC's to students or something...
  5. I just leave old components lying around in boxes. Possibly to be used as spares if required.

When I say "old" it still applies to relatively new second hand parts.

I only created this thread because I saw a similar spec components to myself on the MM and it worried me. They were going for far less than originally paid, as you'd expect. This is why I build second hand machines for me, make a HTPC, make on for GF etc.

Also wanted to check if there was some ingenious use for parts that I hadn't thought of.

3) My sister is currently rocking a C2Q Q9550 @3.2GHz w/ TRUE, 9800GTX SLI Rig and my grandparents have a nifty Athlon X2 4400+, 7800GTX system.

The thing I find is that the value of a second hand parts drops sharply just due to them being second hand (ie not brand-new and warranty is usually invalid), add on top of that rapid depreciation due to a quickly advancing hardware market. So when I have some parts that I could sell on, I generally come to the conclusion that they are better used if I upgrade one of my family members PCs, since they are generally still good quality parts (in the scheme of things) and the warranty is still valid as I can sort out any RMA.

Although I tend to buy stuff 2nd hand anyway so don't generally lose that much if I sell it on.

5 and some times 2, I've managed to get out a few holes with old parts.

I managed to flash my samsung SSD earlier this year by using an old PC which was being kept for parts, all the other PC's I had access to would not do the job.

2, except for my trusty 9800GTX which has seen years of gaming and has survived tons of abuse including my latest saga of a metal spring popping out of a cooler and landing across solder joints for at least a week! That card is being framed and saved until the time comes...
