A new Open Source Graphics API is coming, Vulkan promises to be an efficient low level API which rivals Microsoft's DirectX 12.

So the question is would you use an Open Source OS if Mainstream Games were to become available on them? They come in many flavours including:

Ubuntu ## Kubuntu ## SteamOS

Current backers include: Epic, Valve, Unity, Blizzard, DICE, Oxide Games as well as Hardware Vendors such as AMD, ARMH and Nvidia.

Chose one option.

#3 "I use Windows only and would switch to an Open Source OS with Vulkan only"

#4 "I use Windows and an Open Source OS, it will stay that way"

#5 "I only use an Open Source OS, it will stay that way"

I want an OS that has the most compatibility as possible for myself.
Windows is that OS, and that's what I'll continue to use. I'd lose an extornationate amount of my Steam list if I was to use a Linux based distro, as well as losing out performance wise (Obviously for compatibly their is "wine" but meh)

It doesn't make a difference if one is Open Source or not, it doesn't have any impact on my choice.

If I went to a Linux Distro, I'd only be spiting myself.

Although I do use Android daily on my phone :p

I use windows and would switch to another OS if I can play my current games on it. I dunno how likely that would be but I don't see many new PC games coming out that won't support windows and I'd rather not juggle OS so I will stick with it (especially as 10 is free)

Also, technically this shouldn't be in the GPU section.

Technically perhaps, yet all the gamers are in this room and Vulkan is about improving GPU and CPU performance as well as improving graphical quality in games.

Technically it could go in the Games room, the OS room, the CPU room or the GPU room.

Most of the members this is targeted at are in this room.

The title is using about using OS's, along with the post, with a side snippet about API and a few companies.

It belongs in the software section of the forums.

It doesn't fit in either the CPU or the GPU section, and it only loosely fits in the PC games.

Tbh, with so many old games and 3rd party things that many games need, I don't think I'd bother switching from Windows.

Too much hassle when things don't work.

I'd be happy to try it out though

I'd love to move over to Linux but the fact is OpenGL has already existed on Linux for years, it's no good having an API when nobody makes games for it.

Option 6,, I use windows and would be willing to retry a open source o/s and Vulkan to compare . I have to agree if the overall pc experience compatibility still isnt in the o/s its wont be widespread uptake. TBH i dont see how anyone could choose with certainty to go i will use Vulkan until its out and we see how it actually performs

I'd like to try it, but I wouldn't abandon Windows completely. Steam OS may help push open source, perhaps they'll use Vulkan. But I doubt that Vulkan on its own will do much. OpenGL hasn't. It also depends what Windows 10 / DX12 is like, if its good, or another flop like Vista and 8...

Basically the same for me. I do use 'nix boxes for work stuff, but for home use windows is an easy winner. MS have hampered themselves for ages trying to maintain compatibility for older stuff and I appreciate the effort, the open source world is way too excited by the new and anyone using older stuff gets the shaft much too quickly. Until this mentality changes I doubt I'll ever use 'nix as my primary platform. Being open source in itself is of no real interest to me (beyond small tools where it means I can maintain them if necessary)

To be honest, I am happy with Windows, 8.1 is absolutely rock solid, I have had more crashes on my PS3 than my PC *touch wood*

Unless the open source O/S is as reliable as Windows, as easy to use, as compatible and runs games much faster I won't bother switching. No point learning a new O/S for little gain.

I run both; got a back up server linux at work.....I'll have old hardware I'll mess around with and put linux on.....game and work on windows.

I won't limit myself by saying oh I'll abandon windows; everything run on there; linux is solid for other things.......but would I use it as a goto system....I do sometime for back upand repairs; but doubtful for main system....I'm lazy :D

Would love to use Linux 100% of the time but until it offers me the reliability and software I use on windows then I can't.
For example in addition to gaming:
Light room is important to me - likes of dark table don't support my Fuji camera
Skype - cannot get webcam microphone to work, and too difficult to get grandparents running on a different product
