Poor Advise/ what do I do now??

Hi.

I joined the forum the other day and asked the forum which graphics card for my a8 3870k pc. I was informed radeon hd7790 was the one to go for. I was asked what my psu was and i told the forum cit 500w atx. I was told its poor quality and should upgrade.

The one which was suggested was corsair 430. I bought it together with my graphics card. fitted everything this morning when it arrived. After 15 minutes it died......................................................

Nothing.... checked fuse ok, speakers still working via usb port but would not switch on.

Re-connected my 500w psu and its working a dream.

Can anyone suggest can i get a refund??? can i send it back and upgrade to a 500w psu?? please help. im stuck and got my case open.....
 
Please learn to edit your posts instead of double/triple posting.

Ask in customer services or phone them about it, surely this is the first thing you'd do when a new product dies...
 
According to calculators that PSU should be enough, it seems you have had a faulty unit if it blew from overload anyway. It should just shut down.

Contact the retailer and ask for a warranty replacement. You can also try negotiating a possible refund.

You could also claim for a DOA (Dead on arrival) possibly as it blew in 15 minutes.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a psu with such little headroom, as overclocking can eat it up quickly.
 
At full load the HD 7790 pulls ~85W. So with the A8 3870K APU and that graphics card then that PSU should be perfectly fine to run your system.

The 500W requirement (and generally PSU requirements on graphics cards) is put forward by AMD and Nvidia to cover themselves as they know many people use low-quality PSUs that can't deliver the power they advertise (particularly on the 12V rail).

The Corsair you bought is know to be a pretty decent unit, albeit on the budget side. It sounds like you got a bad individual PSU - and are entitled to a replacement from where you bought it from (if its OCUK shop, then as Suarez mentions - the customer services part of the forum is the place to go next).

You just got unlucky with the psu. It can happen with virtually anything you buy.
Seeing as you're happy with the 7790, it's not all bad news eh? :)
 
As others have said it's not your fault. The 500w requirement is an overly safe estimate. In reality nothing should have gone wrong. Explain the situation in full and I'm sure you'll get a replacement or refund.

Its only your fault if you some how connected it up wrong or something like that (if that's even possible) If its been plugged in correctly then its a faulty unit.

As with anything like this its overclockers you need to talk to.

ive got lines on the display now keep flickering

Is this using the new card and old power supply? Or with the new one?

If the new power supply simply isn't running your system properly and you have connected all cables then it's faulty and not your fault, just open an RMA via your account or phone and get it sent back for a replacement or refund.

Any component can come faulty or dead however good it's meant to be.
 
Faulty unit, it happens.
Send out for RMA, Corsair have a very quick turn around so waiting wont be too arduous. If in need just rebuy the same unit, it's more than capable of your rig...much more so that the **** CiT thing you have atm.

Certainly wasn't poor advice, just unlucky the unit you had blew.

You could even return it under DSR rules within a small enough timescale, but I'm not recommending that, just putting it there as an option.

I don't know the CiT brand, but whats so bad about it that everyone here is slating it so much?

DSR you swallow postage, RMA you can claim it back.
Corsair also have a lightning turnaround (2-3 days) so you really don't lose anything by doing the right thing in this instance.

As for CiT.....i'll let somebody else explain that to you :D
In short, budget and bad. Cheap and nasty, unreliable.

First off.. do not risk using that CiT power suply.

What happened with the corsair power supply? Did it go bang? Perhaps the motherboard connectors just weren't in properly. Check over the basics before assuming its faulty.

The corsair cx430 is 100% suitable for the 7790.
 
Sounds like you just got unlucky. Can happen to even the very best and most expensive components. I'd be looking to contact the retailer and explain whats happen. The Corsair CX430W is a decent budget oriented psu. Used a few over the years in various builds (and in considerably more powerful and power hungry systems) and I've never had an issue.
 
It's definitely just unlucky with the Corsair unit being faulty.

But for now, I still advise against using your 7790 with your Cit500W and just to stick with the use of the APU for now. I know the urge to use the 7790 is hard to bear, but if you chance it with the CiT 500W, the next time the PSU blows, the PSU may not be the only thing die on you....
