I've always seen a Jag as a bit of an old man's car... I've never really considered buying one. Saying that, I'd probably take one of those over an A4.

I think this kinda warped image thing people have going on is what ruined the X-Types chances.
Has jag traditionally made cars to compete in this sector?
Small Saloons?

Can you give me some advice on how I might become poor enough to spend that sort of money on a new Jaguar?

The X type - £32k
Thats why its the poor mans Jag.
If you have £32k to spend, get a 2nd hand version of a proper jag...
They're now a poor mans jag though. Not when they were new, since, as you say in your first post, they can be had amazingly cheaply.
That chaps XKR was £70k, that's quite a big difference on the new prices, and they're both significantly cheaper now, but one is still much more expensive than the other.
I don't understand your point![]()
You are not getting it, or you are fishing for a bite.
Dont think "car" or "money".. Think image. But if you want it in money terms:
XJ - £88k
XK - £78k
XF - £60k
The X type - £32k
Thats why its the poor mans Jag.

That'll work well for company car users - Jags main target market with the X-Type.
I think it was outdated illogical and nonsensical 'image' opinions that did the X-Type in. It was Jags potential big ticket to big things.

Or its the jag for the person that wants a smaller 4 door saloon.
If they never launched the X-type you would be calling an XF a poor mans Jaguar by that logic?
Poor mans just refers to cheapest in the range then why is it such an issue to brand it?
Surely the poor mans Jag is the 20yr old XJ6?
Plenty of people buy a 3 series, and thats just a poor mans 5 series, which is a poor mans 7 series right?
You want to buy a new car, you want to buy a Jaguar. Remove the X type from the equation and you are left with a 60k car. You cant afford it. Lucky for you, Jaguar thought it would be a good idea to water down the image and try to make a few quid - enter the cheap Jag.
Poor mans jag.
This invariably comes up in every other Porsche thread. A "poor man's [insert what you like]" is an idiom, not to be interpreted literally, so actual monetary value, whatever it may be in this context, has nothing to do with it.

[TW]Fox;15643250 said:Exactly. Because making a few quid is the reason the companies exist. After all, there is a watered down BMW, a watered down Audi and a watered down Lexus..... and its where each company makes most of its money.
Money it uses to fund models people like you enjoy.
No. Why must you be a poor man simply because you went for the cheaper option?
If a poor man buys a brand new X-Type what are you with your 8 year old £14k XKR? Below the poverty line?
Doesn't the XF start around 34k anyway, not 60k?
Or are you only quoting top models as the XJ starts at around 53k, XK 60k , and X Type 22k.
