Poor PC performance when connected to 4k tv

Hi there, I’m no PC expert so looking for a bit of guidance and advice. I have what I think is a pretty decent pc (Intel i9-12900k, 32gb 3600mhz DDR4 RAM, RTX 3080) and I normally have it connected to a 49inch LG ultra wide monitor where I can run pretty much everything at max settings (eg Cyberpunk runs at Ray Tracing Ultra at a solid locked 60 fps).

Tonight I thought I’d move the PC into my living room to connect it to my 4k LG OLED tv for some more relaxed gaming and I am having some real performance issues. Attempting to run Cyberpunk and the benchmark test is giving me a max of 11fps. Reducing the settings to low and at 1440p output only increases it to about 14 fps. Some games such as Sackboy won’t even open, they just lag horribly through the startup animation and then crash.

I thought I’d be able to run connected to a 4k tv without issue. Is this not the case? I thought an RTX 3080 could handle 4k gaming. Does the fact it’s a tv and not a monitor make any difference? Can anyone offer and suggestions as to why this isn’t working? Should I just give up on the idea and stick to my PS5?

Thanks!

Check that the card is fully slotted into the pcie slot and has not come loose. Also check all the cables are fully in place then check the card is being recognized in windows and run a benchmark to check performance. Sounds like the pc is trying to use the integrated gpu to run the games and not the 3080.

With Cyberpunk do the settings manually and check nothing funky is going on and you are not actually playing at 8k or something silly.

Is the cable different to the one you used on the monitor? I just wonder if it's a cheapo HDMI cable that can't handle the bandwidth needed? Not sure on cable specs, but you do need the good ones for 4k high refresh rates.

You haven’t mistakenly plugged the hdmi cable into the onboard graphics instead of the gpu?

Thanks all for the responses so far. Cable is definitely connected to the hdmi port of the gpu and the cable is a brand new high quality hdmi 2.1 cable I bought from Amazon. I do normally connect the monitor via the display port tho so not sure whether change from display port to hdmi could have an impact? Card seems fully seated as far as I can tell. Will run a benchmark test

So I can’t even run a benchmark test it would seem. Have executed Perfmon twice and both times the PC has just shut down before the test has completed. Any thoughts?

This is nothing to do with the TV or cables. Something has come loose or been dmged when you have moved the PC. Is the heatsink still fully in place? Try taking ram out and reseating it and just generally check and reseat all the cables.

And on top of this check load and temperature of CPU and GPU...

You should expect a slight drop as its having a push a few extra pixels, but not to the extent that you're actually seeing.

Funnily enough though, I changed from a 165hz 1440p display to a 60hz 4k TV this afternoon, and I would definitely say that I'm noticing more draw artefacts when moving things around in the OS ... i.e. when expanding a window, its initially black, then filled with the content of the window a fraction later. I dont remember seeing that with the high refresh display.

What port do you have the cable plugged into on the TV ? my sony 4k I'm using now has 3 hdmi ports, but only port 3 ( which is labelled HDMI3/ARC ) has the capability to run 4k60 in RGB mode. Ports 1 and 2 dont have the bandwidth, and when connected through that have to drop to 4:2:0 colour modes.

The C1 has 4x 2.1 ports, one being eARC, but i would try another port just in case. Also a different port on the card if there is one.

If you haven't already, try the monitor again but with hdmi if you can to eliminate the possibility of it being the hardware at fault somewhat.

Thanks all again for your comments. I am now thinking it is a CPU issue. Just installed some monitoring software and the CPU is sitting at 100 degrees without me running anything on the PC and it is now shutting itself off after a few mins max. I bought it as a pre-built machine and luckily it has a repair warranty so I think it needs to go back. Before I do that though, does everything look OK from the images below? Nothing obviously amiss - fans right way round etc ? All cables and parts are connected properly as far as I can tell.

Just googled it so it's the bit that sits on top of the processor and connects to the fans at the top of the case. Seems to be working as far as I can tell. It's RGB's are lit up like a Christmas tree  . Can't hear any whirring or gurgling other than the whirring from the fans.

MSI recalled some coolers because of sediment build up causing blockage, maybe yours is one of those affected.

Time to send it back to Overclockers.

It's probably your nvidia control panel settings - took me ages to get mine working properly and was all down to control panel. Looks great though on 4k oled once it's sorted - you won't ever go back to the old monitor
