Poor performance from first time new build.

Hello,

I've recently built my first computer, however the performance (especially in games is very disappointing) in some games such as overwatch, CSGO I am only getting 40FPS which is strange considering the specs of the system;

i5 7600K
ASUS 1080TI STRIX OC
32GB Tident X RGB ram
ASUS Z270 IX HERO mobo
2x 250 Samsung SSD
Custom watercooling loop done by myself, and so far holding stable temperatures.

One thing I will mention is I am using the Thermaltake core p5 case, and thus a riser cable for the GPU, I would try plugging it directly into the motherboard, but the hard tubing prevents that (planning fail doh!)

The two things I can come up with are the riser cable being faulty OR perhaps the BIOS needs updated for 7th gen CPUS?

Any suggestions?

Thought I'd get that question out of the way first!

To address your concerns about the PCI-e riser cable - give GPU-z a go. It includes a test to determine the state of the PCIe connection (generation and number of lanes):

Just click the question mark next to the "bus interface field".

You can also use it to determine that your GPU clock speeds are where they should be etc. - use the sensors tab while playing a game.
 
Your mobo, being a Z270 comes out of the box with 7th gen CPU support but check for a BIOS upgrade anyway.

What resolution and game settings are you running on?

Hi,

Downloaded cpu-z claims that the card is reporting it runs 16x 3.0 but is currently running at 16x 1.1

GPU speed comes in at 1900 MHz during a game, which seems a little high if I recall the card is 1700 MHz in OC mode?

2560x1440 at 144hz in games, with gsync enabled. All settings are on epic or high, but I really doubt thats an issue to this machine as friends have less powerful machines and are performing much better?

One other problem I've just noticed, when viewing youtube videos etc the videos have heavy artifacts on them, as well as the sound being distorted/crackling.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, I found the problem, the riser cable was bad. Bought a new one and everythings gravy now. Thanks.
 
This may sound odd but could you bench your PC with both the good and the bad riser cables? It would be very useful to have data on how PCIe speed affects frame rates.
