Poor performing wireless

Hi all,

I've recently moved into a house share - so I've got to use wireless for the first time. So far I'm really disappointed with the performance and wanted to ask a couple of questions.

I've so far tested out a Linux distribution torrent (being as the tracker is a proven fast one) and I get 500kbs from that which I'm more than happy with. I also downloaded some drivers over HTTP and that was quite quick too.

However, if I download any video content, I'm getting slow speeds but I'm not sure if this is just a slow server (testing by downloading video game fan movies). Also streaming videos over BBC iPlayer or the new ITV Player - is quite slow.

This is the setup:
  • Zen 8 meg connection, receiving about 6000Kb/s (reported from router)
  • Linksys WAG54G v2 - Latest firmware
  • Netgear WG311v3 - latest drivers
  • Vista64
  • My PC is the only client connected to the network, have good signal.

I've made the wireless use G mode only, same with the adapter via properties accessed in device manager. I've also unticked IPv6 in network properties as I read about this on the internet. WPA PSK TKIP security.

Does anyone know any free video download sites (legal) which they know they can get good speeds on? Video content doesn't seem to go above 50Kb/s usually.

Anyone know of anything obvious that could be wrong?

Don't know any Video sites but it could be to do with UDP packet corruption. Check the counters on the router for the WIFI interface for output errors.

Try www.chronixradio.com It's an audio streaming site with up to 128kbit streams, see if you get blips in that. This should rule out and form of bandwidth throttling/trafic shaping either on your ISP or the website.

Video streams in web browsers can be affected by the quality of codec you have locally. Make sure you have a good codec pack installed for the formats you're viewing.
