Poor SSH and ftp performance

I regularly use SSH and ftp to work remotely. Lately SSH connections are subject to lengthy delays trying to log in, once logged in response from the terminal can can be very sluggish. Also ftp regularly times out whilst trying to connect.

Are there easy ways of diagnosing the problem as both my provider and work network are reporting no issues!

this normally only affects log ins but - is the dns set up correctly on the ssh server you are logging into?
 
I found that I had a similsr sort of thing turned out to be my belkiin router. not saying your router is uggered but it may be worth a look
