Poor temperatures with VF900???

Hi all,

I installed the Zalman VF900 on my X1900XT (Not OC'ed) yesterday.

My Idle temp is 47 degrees. However when I run the performance test in Company of Heroes twice it is shooting up to 104 Degrees. This seems awfuly high.

I am running the latest Cat's with the CCC. I also have ATITool running to monitor the temps.

When installing the VF900 I used Articlean 1 + 2, and then I put a grain of rice sized blob on the GPU (AS5).

Should I try again as the temps seem why to high at load???

Also is there anything special I need to do with the fan control on ATITool. I have the fan mate attached to the VF900 and its set to high.

any help much appreciated

Those temps seem very high.

Is the fan definitely turning.

My max temps went from 75 to 55 when I installed it on my X1950PRO. At the moment at idle it is sitting at 35

Yes the fan is definatley turning. I have just cleaned up and reapplied the AS5 with a thin layer. Still the same temps though!!!

any more on this as i am having the EXACT same problem, just i have a Zalman fatality cooler instead of the normal vf900.

I think perhaps the VF-900 isn't really a good cooler for a X1900 as it does not exhaust the heat out of the case and is a quiet cooler more than a performance cooler.

When I had a VF-700Cu it wasn't any better than the stock cooler of my 7800GT, it was quieter though, perhaps with the extra heat a X1900 produces the VF-900 has the same limitation?

I had a VF900 for my 1800XT 256MB and X1900XT 512MB, and also used an Accelero X2 for a short time. Compared to the Accelero X2 at least, the VF900 most definitely is a performance cooler and is more than capable of keeping an X1900 cool.

As you said though, it doesn't exhaust heat from the case, but anyone with half-decent case ventilation need not worry. The only alternative is a HIS IceQ 3 cooler, which is supposedly superior to the VF900 in every way and exhausts heat from the case, but has suffered from many problems with rattling fans and such as of late.

maybe add a little more paste. It's better to have to much than to little.

Also try to keep the heatsink as steady as possible when installing the back screws.

Rubbish, the vf900 is an excellent cooler, more than capable of cooling a simple 1900xt.
If the air is too hot in the gfx area it means you have poor case cooling, that isn't the zalman's fault, they are excellent coolers.

Have you tried touching the Heatsink and seeing if it 'feels' hot? If it doesnt then you have bad contact. The VF900 is an excellent HSF and outperforms the Artic Cooler on my GF6800GT

hmm fraid its not for me tbh, i put the stock powercolor cooler back on my x1900xt and the temps have decreased incredibly.

before it would struggle to keep 650/750 under 90oc with the zalman, now back on the stock cooler i have it at 720/825 and i havent seen it go over 75oc and trust me its warm in here.

Are you sure its getting enough power?
I installed my VF900 about 4 days ago and I had to buy a molex to 3 pin adaptor to connect to the fan as it wasn't getting enough power from the Motherboard.
Now its fine.
