Poor TF2 Performance?

I had this, turned out to be only using one core. I opened the task manager and set affinity to all cores I then pretty much double my frame rate.
That really doesn't work, anyway; I thought all games ran with affinity set to all cores unless you manually changed them.
The problem lies in the programming, useless telling 2 or 4 cores to do one task.
Mines at 3.3GHz paired with a GTX 260 and I still get slow downs. Type net_graph 1 into the console, I'd put money on it dropping in heavy fights. Ive seen as low as 35FPS

No matter how much you lie to yourself, 3.6GHz will not keep your FPS fixed at 60 or higher. Multi core support will! The fact you say quad is irrelevent.

yeah it dips, but never to 35. I can't remember ever seeing less than 60fps, and that was whilst doing a 380GB file transfer in the background.
no need for netgraph, I have showfps set to 2.
You have a magic Q6600 in that case, or play on an insanely low resolution. 35FPS is the worst case FPS drop. I am pretty honest about my performance, average dip would be 45FPS~ in heavy scenes.
If what you say is true, there wouldn't be masses of posts on the Steam forum requesting multi core support.
Yeah I know - I have been running my quad at 3.2/2.8 but my DS3 965 will no longer overclock - it works fine at stock though.
I could get an Asus P5Q Pro however I'd rather save for an i7.
I wouldn't bother with an i7 if you already have a quad. Get a mobo and cooler, clock it to 3.2GHz and sit tight until it actually starts to struggle. We should now be seeing more multi core software and games being developed that use 4 or more threads; boosting Core2 Quads' life.
Personally, I'm sitting tight until A) the economy is sorted B) intel release a new architecture or die shrink (depending when A is achieved).
Considering the price hikes of older hardware, makes you wonder what we really should be paying for this new stuff. All I will say is June 2008, Q6600 Retail = £116...

I have a good cooler. I have a TRUE120 - as I've said it's my motherboard that's the issue.
You need more processor MHz!
Your 4870X2 is so so overkill for TF2, that game runs sweet even on a humble Radeon HD4670
By hook or by crOOk get at least 3GHz CPU speed and you will be back to decent FPS!
