Poor wifi in an extension, is it possible to use a cheap wifi router off a ethernet switch?

As per the title, a friend has poor wifi in an extension.

We are aware we can set up powerline adapters that also have a wifi point, to take the network into the extension.

But, we're also wondering if we can buy a cheap sub-£50 wifi router to create a wifi point in the extension?

The router is in the top of the building and an ethernet cable takes the network into a 5-port ethernet switch which is inside the extension, of which there is one free ethernet output, so we're assuming that we can then plug into the cheap wifi router to create a wifi point?

And if so is this an easy thing to set up?

Also, if it is viable, recommendations for sub £50 wifi routers are welcomed; we reckon anything over 500mbps will be fine for the wireless.

Some routers will have an access point mode so you just set it to that, then plug it in. If not, turning off the DHCP server on the router, and setting the router to an IP that doesn't conflict with the main router also works. You can also replace the switch with the router if you want to save space/plug sockets, the other ethernet ports will still work.
