Hi all.

I recently bought a Netgear DG834GT and I noticed it's wireless seems to be very poor compared to my old Linksys WAG354G that it replaced.
With my old router I would get 5/5 (excellent) signal throughout the entire house and I could use the laptop right up the end of my garden (probably 30 meters or so).
The DG834GT wireless seems to be all over the place. My brothers laptop which is only about 5 meters away from the router often loses connection and the signal fluctuates from 1 to 5 bars within seconds... He can't listen to any music on his Squeezebox at all because it keeps cutting out completely.

Any idea why the wireless could be so poor? I was expecting it to be better than the old Linksys WAG354G but it can't even work properly through one small thin wall ~ 5 meters from the router!

Try changing the wireless channel to either 3 or 8 (non default channels which shouldn't be used by other routers in your area). Also change the wireless mode back to b/g only and retest.

I will try changing the channels later but I live in a rural area with no other wireless routers visible so I doubt it's that causing it.
I think it is set to b/g only already.

I assume that the new router is in exactly the same place as the old one?

Yes, same place as the last one.

What firmware you running? I'm running V1.02.16 - DGTeam Rev. 0848 and get excellent signal in every room of my three bed house and the router is upstairs in the front bed room?

V1.02.16 - DGTeam Rev. 0847

I might trying updating it to Rev. 0848 and see if it makes any difference.

Clearly something isn't right here as the router is only 5 meters from the laptop and sqeezebox... With my old router my laptop could work right up the end of my garden, about 30 meters away.

Weird... I just tried my Dad's laptop (Sony Vaio) and it has excellent signal throughout the house and good signal right up the end of the garden.
It seems to be only my brothers laptop and Squeezebox that is having problems. His laptop goes from Very good signal to Low signal in seconds and when playing music through his Sqeezebox it sometimes loses connection completely and the music stops, which is incredibly annoying.

Any idea why only certain devices would be having problems?

I am already using the DGTeam firmware. I will try changing the firmware soon and see if it fixes it.

I've noticed another more serious problem. Sometimes webpages, emails and game servers time out completely and stop responding. It's happened a few times now and tonight it happened while playing an online game. I exited the game and tried to check my emails and that failed too.

I've now moved back to my old router and everything is fine. My brothers laptop and squeezebox now has full signal strength, emails are working fine, web pages are loading fine and online gaming servers are all responding.

I have no idea what the problem is. I will try a different firmware and hope that fixes it.

i have the same router, its renowned for bombing out. Ive stuck with it, It seems to be stable now, but somethimes things take ages to happen with it :( So i might get a new one also :D
