I'm setting up an email server which downloads emails from POP3 mailboxes on hosts.co.uk to an internal Kerio Connect server using POP3. The download fails on the later mailboxes (anything more than about 10), but if I disable the earlier mailboxes in the list they work again.

Would it be normal for hosts.co.uk to limit simultaneous connection from one IP address? Or does the problem lie elsewhere?

Yes, I have raised a support ticket with them. Just asking in case it's industry standard and our setup is a bit abnormal

I've had pop3 barf when multiple clients are pulling mail at the same time before. You don't normally notice it if there aren't many emails, but if there are a lot you increase the chances of the clients being connected at the same time.
If you've ever tried getting gmail to pull lots of pop3 mail from another account you'll see it grabbing something like 100 at a time with a pause in between. Maybe trying that approach will have more success.

I think the reason for the setup was that we wanted emails to be accessible in the office in Outlook, via webmail in a browser and on portable devices but having it all in-house was too much of a hassle and too complicated to set up. We let a third party deal with filtering all the junk and we'd download it via POP3 and send via authenticated SMTP.

I'm guessing that things have moved on since we initially set this up (2005?). What do you recommend as an alternative? I think we suggested a hosted exchange solution but the owner had cold feet with regards the 'the cloud'

At my place we've stopped handling our mail ourselves and have a business gmail setup instead. We can use any device. People that still insist on using outlook clients can.

Where do you think data is stored on a pop server? If you have clients set to download all mail you have no backup at all.

Hosted exchange is perfect for every condition.

Just to clarify, one server downloads the email and the clients connect to it. But I agree that it's time to move on to a hosted solution
