Looking at most of the threads on the first 80, uh, threads on GD's front page (check your sizing, yo) most of them have multiple replies running to hundreds or even thousands of responses. They're popular, relatable and resonate so get further responses. We don't have lots of threads on different topics which all garner, say, 50 responses.
Do threads get heavy traffic because they're:
1. Interesting therefore popular;
2. Popular therefore interesting;
3. Popular & interesting; or
4. Uninteresting but get traction.
