Was this REALLY necessary? Wtf is it with the bbc where they have to keep trying to reinvent the wheel? Watched the first episode which seems to have next to no advertising and i can understand why. Utter crap.

Instead of Mr Mackay we get Mr Meekie, Barrowclouth is now Braithwaite, and the big twist is Fletcher (fletch's grandson) is now the young guy with the new guy in his cell being an old timer. They even managed to shoehorn in Pineapple chunks and the "i won't let you catch me" line into the first episode.

Apparently are you being served is also getting remade..

Yup, Are You Being Served was on last night directly before Porridge.

It too, was awful.

Just finishing that now, nothing but forced innuendo's, ok the old show also had them, but this is like every time someone speaks. I don't think I've heard the word "pussy" as much in a show before.

Big fan of Ronnie Barker and the original series but because I'm genetically superior, I chose not to watch it. I knew it would be ****. :p

I really hope these were one offs and not opening the door for new series. They were both utterly dreadful.

They're supposedly pilots with the intention of creating a new series, much like still open all hours. =/

I hadn't heard that either of these were being remade so thanks for the heads up- will definitely steer clear.

Looks like viewers liked this, but didn't like the Are You Being Served? one off.

I can probably see why this Porridge one off was liked; it written by the same guys who penned the original series. Are You Being Served? though, was written by the guy who does Benidorm.

Hopefully they aren't rebooting Allo Allo.

Didn't they say they couldn't remake 'Allo 'Allo these days because it'd be considered racist against French, German and Italian people. Maybe I imagined that though.

One thing I definitely did read though was a suggestion that these remakes were about the BBC punishing old people for voting Brexit.

Please tell me where you read that, comments section on the mail website maybe?

So what you are saying is that at the end of June they decided to take this action, then write, film, edit and air these shows in the last 8 weeks?

Sounds plausible I must say.

Much like the Carry On films, the humour in the originals is "of its age" and trying to reproduce that in current times just doesn't translate.

Porridge was one of my favourite things growing up and this got turned off after about 5 minutes. No need to remake and the original will never be surpassed.

Is there no limit to how many favourite shows the BBC intends to take a great steaming dump on and call it a "reboot"?

Its the way these days. You can even use the sentence above and replace a few words and come out with...

Sadly, creativity is a forgotten art.

Was pleasantly surprised when I heard the good stuff was on for an hour only to find out it was new stuff. We knew it would be a waste of time so watched Victoria instead.

I will be actively avoiding this, I'm a massive fan of the original and I still rewatch it to this day (particularly the first season which is excellent and never gets old).

I'll just stick my head in the sand and pretend like this never happened.

As others have said that's another one to avoid. Still love the original and often watch it even now but trying to recapture it is plain daft.

Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale* were just perfect together.

*If Beckinsale hadn't died so young I firmly believe he would have continued to be one of our greatest most popular comedic actors.**

** he also gave us Kate Beckinsale who I enjoy watching running around in tight pants (in Underworld, not some pervy dream, well, not usually)

Completely pointless remake, when the original is absolute perfection and could not be improved.

The original is a fresh now as when it was made. A new version is totally redundant.

Just a pointless waste of money. I still watch the original regularly today.
