Hi All,

I'm after some advice. Im looking at replacing my Primera with either a Porsche 924 or a MK1 MR2 to use as a daily driver.

They're both cheap to buy and not that expensive to run but which one is more sensible? Im not exactly mechanically minded and I don't have a drive so something thats easy to work on with cheap/easy to get hold of parts would be better.

Im going to meet some people from the 924 owners club later tonight to ask questions, have a look around their cars etc

I know there are a few MR2 owners on here so does anyone have any advice?

924 is probably easier to work on with FR layout. Also most parts are available cheap from GSF or Eurocarparts.

You can run a 924 on a shoestring thanks to VW parts. 944s need a lot more care and have a bunch of special belts which require special tools etc etc.

The 924 was not Porsche's finest hour but they are not bad cars, just slow Porsche's built to a price to attract a new audience back in the day. I am no expert but I think most will feel very old, slow and dated but the owners club will give you a feel for it. I would expect it to be easier to work on than an MR2 however due to where the lump sits but again thats just a feeling.

You need to look no further than this video!

I've only just got my MR2 so not hugely experienced/knowledgable etc but it's been a right laugh hooning it around already and as far as im aware the 4AGE engine is fairly solid.

You didn't mention what budget you were running on? <1k will get you a high miler with quite a few owners and expect a fair bit of rot on the arches. But when you start going above 1.5k that'll get you a pretty decent example. But like others posted, that is close to MX5 money so it depends what you like more?

Not sure how engine location affects how easy they are to work on, never really had any issues getting to stuff on the MR2 or anything. Only slight complication is that bleeding the cooling system is slightly more involved but it's not exactly rocket science.

Got no experience on the Porsche so can't offer anything useful in the way of comparison but happy to tell you anything you want to know about the MR2s

Im looking at under £1k so I know they won't be the best examples of anything I buy. Would like a MX5 too but they are a little bit more expensive.
Want something fun and cheap basically. 924 is no faster than my current car but it will be more fun to drive and thats really why I want to change.

The MR2 I've seen has had the rear arches replaced so hopefully it'll be ok!

Kaiowas. this is the MR2. Can you give me an opinion based on the ad?

Thanks!

lol, saw that one recently and was tempted to have a look myself as it's pretty local. If you plan on going to see it I'll come with you if I'm not busy.

Seems promising from the ad although as usual it'll need to be seen in person to get a proper feel for how good it is.

It would have to be the weekend as its a 3hr drive for me. Possibly fit something in with your meet at the weekend?

Yeah, I think we'll just be spending Sunday morning cleaning cars and tinkering. Would have thought we could fit in a viewing of this late morning/lunchtime then head along to the meet.

That would be awesome. Thanks. MR2 is the car I've wanted for longer and I'm more confident it will be the more reliable car. *crosses fingers*

Have you had any problems with yours? Been looking at MK1 MR2's for ages, nearly bought one when my Primera failed its MOT but let the girlfriend talk me into fixing the Primera (she likes it for some reason )
