its a 1983 porsche 928s. 4.7, 16v, kjet, V8. 310bhp with 5 speed manual in black.

it has been sat up for over 15 years when there was a suspect head gasket failure.

to get it back on the road a lot of work is needed. There are a number of big steps and then a mountain of trivial things.

First trivial job was a compression test, I wanted to see if there was an obvious head gasket failure.

4: 11.9BAR 172.6psi ____8: 12BAR 174psi
3: 12.7BAR 184.2psi ____7: 11.9BAR 172.6
2: 13BAR 188.5psi _____6: 11.85BAR 171.8psi
1: 13.3BAR 192.9psi____5: 12.5BAR 181.3psi

bank 5-8 seems fine, im happy with that. bank 1-4 seems odd. cyls 1+2 are high. its only a 10:1 compression engine

First biggie is a cambelt change. I suppose it’s a good way to get introduced. That’s all good so far, just waiting for parts to come in the post (belt, tensioner, idler etc) c.£200. eeek

Ive had a play with the rad, found out that the integrated oil cooler is leaking into the rad (so lessening the chance of the head gasket failure)

Next bit step is the fuel injection. The kjet metering flap is seized, the injectors will be messed up too, so more work needed there.

Then I need to sort a radiator. Porsche want £900+ for a new one. Im going to get a large alloy item and mock up my own separate oil cooler with a big elec fan to replace the viscous one. A new stat is in the post too.

That should have the engine startable.

Then I need to replace gearbox oil, diff oil, brake fluid, brake lines, all discs and pads, pas fluid.

It ought to be road worthy then. Ill need to tax and MOT it and stick new tyres on.

Im aiming to do one big expense per month, so it may take a while. Not really counting the cost, things like vac hoses, plugs, HT stuff etc are all needed and I cannot be arsed adding it up (you never add up car stuff)

Oh, and then the kjet will need to be set up by a clubgti hero called toyotec.

And I need new fuel lines

May the force be with me etc

im not going to rush it, it can become a chore when you pressure yourself. im going to enjoy working on this thing. i dont want it to hang around either though incase i lose enthusiasm or forget how things go back together!

with regard to access a lot of things had to come out, but there is enough space to stand in there.

the crank pulley bolt is held on by a 27mm nut at 290NM. that required a breaker bar and 4ft of exhaust to undo, so im thankful for the space.

ill be getting it timed up on monday hopefully when the parts arrive. on tuesday ill be getting the anciliaries put back on.

one step at a time. pics will follow of the interior and exterior. the exterior is so messy i cant bring myself to take pictures at the moment tbh

this is how it will look on the outside

Where is the gearbox on this? Is it on the back of the engine or at the back on the axle?

awesome, i really like 928s, does it have the chequered velour interior? :D

hope it runs better than clarkson's when you get it doing ;)

:( no it doesnt have the chequer and it doesnt have the three spoke steering wheel either.

id like those as theyre properly 70s style

it does have magnolia leather and a manual box, so i wont cry lol

can you post some pics of the car itself, too? i'd be interested to see how it looks in its current state :)

www.porscheshop.co.uk are a bunch of idiots

i call them up, everything they sell is genuine porsche in porsche boxes and we talked about this kit

Full Service Kit for S/S2/S4 Round Tooth - includes cam belt, cam belt tensioner & cam belt idler roller £175.95 / €197.94 inc VAT

we didnt talk in a lot of depth because it was a miserable sod on the other end of the phone who sounded so put out to be selling porsche bits, but numpty confirmed it was a belt, the idler roller and the hydraulic tensioner

a week and £200 later a tatty box arrives with (as far as im concerned) a no brand belt, a shoddy feeling idler roller and a tensioner roller and a shtt termostat that rattles, none of which are in porsche boxes.

i could have got a conti belt from ECP for £20, a febi idler roller for £30, i dont need the tensioner roller and i could have got an actual PORSCHE stat for another £20 delivered direct from PORSCHE.

the lot of its going back... a waste of time and money. useless

Dammit, sorry to hear that.

Love the look of the project though, do have a soft spot for these but always put off by various things.

Still, top stuff. I will watch with interest!

the tensioner bolts to the block and the tensioner is oil filled so requires a gasket... he even said it came with the gasket. im not used to parts depts who blatantly lie

ive just had a barny with porscheshop.

firstly there is a 20% handling charge. this has been waived. i wont get the refund until the parts are returned. ive said they are available to collect tomorrow but their courier doesnt do collection and apparently they cannot instruct other couriers

they want me to return the parts at MY cost. not a chance. me spend £10-£15 to experience this shambles?

apparently its in the terms of sale but sending me a tensioner was also terms of the sale as far as i remember.

i got a tensioner pulley which is apparently what they call a "cambelt tensioner" (stated on their website and the invoice). so as far as im concerned the terms of sale go out the window.

they refuse to collect them and refuse to give my money back until they are returned. ive been in touch with barclaycard already to get my money back

the genius at porscheshop has informed me that if i get the money back it is theft and they will call the police and they will arrest me.

this is what im having to deal with

RE the compression test thing, you might find one cylinder has a weepy oil seal on a a valvestem (or oil's getting in somewhere...) hence the slightly higher reading - especially if it's been sat a while.

Might go away once you've run it a bit and the readings may equalise :)

That supplier sounds like a pain, hope you get it sorted. I'm pretty sure if the credit card refunds the money they do so with their own money, you give them the goods and they pursue it with the supplier. It's out of your hands then. Might be worth confirming with them if that's the case, have a quick word at the CAB etc.

Lets see some piccies of the car then. Stripped and on stands is what we want to see ;)
