so my dad has a very smart one of these and I’ve driven it a few times, but I’ve always wanted a proper go in it for a few days or something.

Sadly that hasnt happened but, the several hours I have had, have left me wanting more.

In a few months I should be in a position to fund a second hand one.

I know to avoid the 986 due to bore scoring etc but the above 987’s can be had between 12-15k for a decent one. I appreciate there is a series one and two - has anyone got one or can guide me with a few tips on what to lookfor please? Also, has anyone ever fiddled with the exhausts in order to generate a more rorty noise? My dads sounds pleasant enough but I feel like it could use a smidge more drama

Thanks

Gen 1 987's also have bore scoring and IMS issues if I remember correctly, happened on a lot of Boxsters, Cayman's, and the 997 generation of the 911.
Look out for the 987 Gen 2 with the DFI engine ideally

Yea they all suffer from it afaik. Avoid them, but you'll probably see it reflected in the price..

The thing is all boxer engines (including Subaru's) are very sensitive to any slight imperfections with oiling. Which is what causes it. But if you get a good one it will last forever.

Bore scoring is less common on the smaller displacement engines found in the boxster, but can still occur. Not sure whether the IMS bearing has the upgrade from the factory for the 2006 MY as per the 911, but worth looking at. The Gen 2 is in theory a more reliable engine but not immune to problems.

Rather than get too picky on Gen 1 vs 2, buy the most well cared for example that your money will buy and don’t be afraid to walk away, there are plenty out there. A pre purchase inspection is money well spent as they tend to identify issues that are easily hidden by a decent valet and an air freshener from a dealer. The boxster has fallen into the realms of affordability and there will be plenty which have been run on a shoestring. They are also sought after by enthusiasts who maintain regardless of cost, so find one of the latter examples.

Lots of after market exhausts available, but why not buy one with the sports exhaust already fitted?

A 3.4S boxster is an awesome machine and extremely capable. In real world situations they’re just as fast as the 911 of the same era.

EDIT: this one looks good- https://www.pistonheads.com/classif...987-manual-sport-chrono-pasm-pcm--fsh/9768015

Your dad never let you have a go for more than a few hours so you want to buy one yourself? No, no. You buy a better car and don't let him drove it.

That is a very tidy example actually - better than most I’ve seen on auto trader
