Port forwarding, uTorrent

I've recently started using uTorrent and in the speed guide in the options tab there's a section at the bottom which talks about port forwarding:

"A port must be forwarded from your router to uTorrent to get good speed....."

If i test my port it says "Error port **** not open", even though i am still downloading. What does this mean, do i have to setup port forwarding? I'm on a wireless network and dont really fancy the settings.

I used to use BitComet and got speeds on average at 40-50kbs down. I've seen it up to 300kbs for short periods of time. On utorrent i seem to be getting roughly the same average, not seen the top speed yet though. I'm on 10mb ntl cable bb. Does this sound about right or am i going to have to fiddle with the port settings? Thanks

you want to open the ports on your router. Just log into the router and there should be an option in the settings.

It is worth doing as you can connect to more people and you will get better speeds

I'm not on the network right now so i cant check, but thanks for the advice. What happens if you dont use a network then, you were connnected directly? On my connection what kind of download speeds should i expect? I know it depends on your upload speed as well and iirc my connnection has poor upload speed. thanks

If i alter the settings on ports etc. will it effect other people on the network? i.e. will i have to change other people's settings? I have a wired connection to the router, everyone else has a wireless connection btw

1200kb with 10 meg,how come i can only manage 400kb with 20 meg

If you mean you only get 400kbs on torrents, that is normal. There are a lot of factors which determine the speed on torents and it is unlikly you will get full speed most of the time.

Try the speed tester here. You Should get around 20000kbps +

If they want to torrent, and use the same port as you, then it won't work - they'll need to use a different port for their torrenting. Whether they're on wireless or not is irrelevant.

Thanks for that tolien. So just to clear this up, if i use port forwarding, everyone's internet connection will be unaffected, including mine, and the only downside will be that other people on the network wont be able to use Torrent apps unless they to set up their own port forwarding? Thanks for all your help guys

If they aren't using the same port, they'll be able to use a torrent app as if the port wasn't forwarded. If they are using the same port, it won't work at all (since any incoming traffic will get forwarded to your machine).

But will the internet settings and everything else stay the same, or will i have to make adjustments? Sorry to keep going on, but i really, REALLY hate networks and everything to do with them so if it went wrong i might cry!

OK finally got back to the comp with router attached, it does have UPnp, so i've activated that, and activated it in uTorrent. So i'm guessing i dont need to bother with the port forwarding websites and such? Thanks for all your help guys.
