How can I do this? The EE internet access via a 4g sim does not allow port forwarding. Can I overcome this by using a VPN? If so how easy it is?

You either need a data contract that comes with a public IP address or a VPN system that's specifically setup for this sort of thing. I've seen mention of such VPNs on here but don't know of any myself.

The issue is that EE are using CGNAT so the WAN address your mobile device is getting will be a private IP address. If you go to something like www.whatismyipaddress.com the IP address listed there doesn't match what the WAN address of your mobile device actually is. EE are putting loads of customers out through a single public IP address. It's a completely standard way of doing it and all mobile networks do it but it does mean that port forwarding doesn't work

Cheers, that is what I thought. Anyone any suggestions for a VPN that supports port forwarding. I've tried two so far one free and one paid for, neither support it.

You can get fixed static external addresses but they are special services. There isn't a thing you going to be able to do on that sim that I'm aware of.

Something like this might be better but your going to be paying through the nose.
EE Blank 4G SIM Card (24 Month Contract) (4gon.co.uk)

This EE SIM comes with Fixed Private IP address as standard. If you require a fixed Public IP address for an additional instead, this is an additional £6. These are on a 24-month term. The initial cost is the cost of the sim not of the tariff itself, this can be viewed on our comparison chart linked on the page.

TorGuard supports port forwarding on ports >2048 on some (this may have changed to all but i remember some of their US and middle-east servers didn't) of their servers; you can also pay extra for a dedicated IP on a server.

Edit - There are a few others that support port forwarding, Mullvard and AirVPN spring to mind.

Be careful with what you want to achieve and how the VPN providers implement their port forwarding solutions. I am out of my depth and have no personal experience but from colleagues I think I've heard that some of them (because of a working assumption of how the majority of their users act) only recommend using their client software to interact with their servers to achieve the port forwarding easily. It's much easier for them to support and makes it more accessible for the majority of their users. Fine if you want to port forward something for a game server running on your Windows box which also has the VPN provider client on. Less good if you implement the client side of the VPN tunnel on your router using just open standards. Something router based is perfectly possible still, just probably requires manual configuration of rules I would have thought.

Depending on what you are trying to do, experience and what you can afford generally you'd be better off renting a VPS to host said service on.

Or you could try something like Hamachi if it is just a small audience who are happy to use that.

This is only a temporary requirement so not worth too much effort or cost. I'll have to borrow a family members 'proper' internet
