Port Forwarding

If I download say a patch or driver that is available via Bit Torrent then I do so using the BitComet client.

Obviously it runs much quicker when the listen port (currently set to 8042) is forwarded in my router.

The problem I have is because there are 4 pc's connected to my router my IP will sometimes change (I think it depends on the order in which they are powered up) so my PC does then not have the port forwareded to it.

What's the best way about this? Static IP's?

Port Triggering? I played with this but couldnt get it to function.

Router is a Netgear RP614 v3 (latest firmware)

Cheers,

Chris

In my Netgear router you can do address reservation..

On yours you can aswell...

go into your routers configuration page (192.168.0.1)

1. Go to attached devices and make a note of the MAC address for your PC

2. Then click "LAN IP Setup"

3. Then you should see "address reservation" and reserve your MAC address to your specified LAN address you want

Hope that helps :)

you shouldnt need port forwarding/triggering for bit torrent, just use UPnP, make sure its enabled on both the router and torrent client, then whenever the torrent client starts up, the router will detect the ports and ip used by the torrent client and sort everything out itself. works fine for my network (although for some reason, even after the torent client is shut down, other ppl keep trying to connect to me on my torrent port, even though its shut down, no idea why).

I have a weird problem now.

This has only occured since installing my new Netgear router.

MSN is unable to connect and I cannot receive any email.

If i restart the router then the problem goes away for a short while but keeps returning.

The router is much faster than the Linksys, web pages load instantly now so it would be a shame to have to remove it.

Any ideas?
