I'm finding this very useful I must admit because my pc went mental recently, so because of this thread I'm now living through my USB stick

[EDIT]
With the Mozilla stuff, if it's not in a folder called 'firefox', etc. in the root directory of the disk you'll need to change the paths in PortableFireFox.ini

PixaMSN works very well, as does the Mozilla stuff. I am using IMAP now though, just in case.

[EDIT2]
How do you find software like this? My Googlism is obviously inferior to yours.

Afew more apps that should work from pen drives, ie they don't need installation.

http://www.photofiltre.com/ photo/picture editor. Between xnview/irfan and ps in features and style but very small and fast.

http://www.rssol.com/ Atlantis Nova word processor

http://rvas.webzdarma.cz/ Cathy - cd or media cataloging prog.

http://www.tranglos.com/free/index.html Keynote, note prog/pim based on rtf format

http://www.pawnchess.com/4584.html chess game

I am not totally sure about all of these working off a pen-drive but I think they are all self-contained and don't use the registry so they should work, just a few more ideas.

And of course http://liquidninja.com/metapad/ Metapad - extended notepad but still very small and fast.

something i would love (providing it was secure enough) is a program that you run and it asks for a password and then it loads up a window (part of the program, not an explorer window) with all your files etc, but also have the ability for plugins to be written for it, so you could maybe have a plugin that autochecks an email account as soon as you "log in" to the program and maybe even have simple reading/reply functions (on the site fatz mentioned, they have many lightweight simple email progs).

cant think of what else, but you get the idea, one program that does useful things that you often do when youre away from your main computer and at uni or something (when you can't install anything)...spose this seems like a silly idea, but id like to see it :)
