I've had a huge search for something which doesn't cost a complete ton of cash and not turned up any results, so I was wondering if you lot had any better ideas or knew something I don't. All I want is an inexpensive portable device which has 2 balanced inputs (eg, will record stereo). I can't seem to find anything for much less than £400.

Media doesn't matter at this point, so anything is an option.

Cheers

Depends what you mean by 'portable' and what price you want to go to...

Do you just wish to record sound, do you wish to record it at a certain quality, do you wish to record straight onto a computer, do you mind using firewire, USB etc - what is the most you would pay?

I can reccommend a load once we know these...

Sony do a new MiniDisc player MZ-RH1 that can record wav files and you can upload and download from machine to PC - its about £240 put the rest on a good mic!

Well I mentioned £400 as being too much in the original post, yes I only require sound, portable to me means battery powered. Audio quality? Well as long as it's not compressing it to 128k MP3 it's ok. The balanced inputs part was pretty important. If I can't find anything I'll probably end up wiring something up myself with one of the older more rugged MD recorders we have.

Wow, that MD player looks awesome. I doubt it'll be available over here in shops though due to the love affair with mp3 players that we have. I'd certainly consider one of those over an ipod if I needed a new portable player right this second.

Sorry I'm no help on the recorder with balanced inputs question.

You can buy this player online in the UK - its about £240 - Caged but why go for an older MD player when this is all you need - older MD players record to atrac - this one records strait to PCM wav so you can export to CD without convertion!!
