Portable FLAC player, what are people using these days ?

I have a feeling there's some new iriver offerings coming to market soon, may well be worth checking out previews online, should be within your price range, depending on the capacity you need.

As above, I'm still in the dark ages (let's say, about 2003) and I'm using a Toshiba Gigabeat F series with rockbox. It's so good I bought another second hand!

Yet to see something come close since the death of mainstream HDD mp3 players.

This may be some use:

Unfortunately I'm still stuck in the dark ages and use my iRiver H120 for portable FLACs.

Cheers, I ended up having a google about the sansa clip in that link then found this little puppy,

The Sansa Fuze,

The reviews seem to indicate that these are very good quality and they can be had pretty cheap tbh, gonna grab one of these and an 8gb micro SD card, so the total cost will be less than £100 for a 16gb flac player.

The cowon iaudio 9 has arrived this week , bbe+ viva ect ie. s9 performance at a budget price, battery life 29hours ,the fuze is a good player though with only the battery life letting it down .it is actually possible to get a lod for it as well off ebay seems there was a bit of debate about if it works better than the hp out but the consensus seems to be positive when hooked up to a decent amp

Sooo.... Are there any other portable players that have digital out and play Flac? I'd love something a little smaller than the iriver...

I ended up with purchasing a non-flac player in the end.....:o

Went into town with the sole intention to purchase the Sansa Fuze but then got temped away by one of these on special offer for £49.99,

Seemed like a bargain tbh, it's the NWZ-S639F, 16gb, 40 hours battery life which is very impressive and it seems to come with some pretty decent ear buds.

Nice looking little play lowrider.

The 'phones look like they might be EX85 or EX90, which are very respectable. Makes it even better value. :)

Must have been a very special offer, that player grabs £100 by the looks of things. Been in the market for a new player (>30gb) and thought I'd see if there was a bigger capacity version of that, alas, not in my price range any time soon :p

What is the sound quality like, I've found Sony to be quite good... when they offer a full equaliser.

Well coming from a 3rd gen iPod which I've been using since launch day !! I'd definitely say that the Walkman's SQ is better, sound stage feels wider, the bass sounds tighter, I would say though that it does sound a little warmer than my iPod but still clean so it should pair well with more revealing can's like the Grado SR60/80/125's or higher quality reference can's, I tended to find that my iPod sounded a little too bright and fatiguing on higher quality can's.

My collection....

Cowon 16gb D2 + 4 x 32gb SDHC card
Cowon 32gb O2 + the same SDHC's as above. Bit too quiet and firmware needs a little work.
Cowon A2 20gb - not used much any more as replaced with the o2 above.
Cowon M3 40gb - battery life measured in minutes
Cowon X5L 30gb - with a broken joystick and a dead battery - works on mains with the remote though
iRiver H140 40gb - mains powered only - battery is shafted.
Sandisk Sansa - Only use it for Audible audiobooks.

All play FLAC. My day to day player is the D2 though, with the O2 loaded with video for longer trips.

Damn, that's a hell of a buy at £50. I have the A810 series, which comes with EX082 phones. Nice of Sony to chuck in decent phones, unlike Apple. :p Just reading a blog on the S639, the guy said it sounds even better than the A810 series. :D

One thing about the batt life, more EQ settings and a higher bitrate MP3 uses more batt life apparently.

Anyone that has a Sony DAP, have you ever tried using a USB mains charger? I bought 2 for my dad and I. Works fine with his cheapo Chinese player, but the Sony will have none of it. They were cheap though, whether that has anything to do with it or not.
