Portable Hardware & Gaming Forum

The challenge with that is ... does the Switch fall I to this category, or into the consoles category?

I do agree we need a specific forum or sub forum for this however.

No idea how big the market is for portables, but a lot of the discussions would benefit from having a dedicated area. The Ally and Leg Go threads are quite dense and there is a lot of good info about tweaking those devices that can be hard to track down

A sub-forum in PC Gaming for PC-based devices makes sense, but the Switch should stay in the Console forum.

What happens when Xbox releases their handheld finally?

Xbox is already basically a PC - so I'd argue an Xbox handheld should be in the PC Gaming section

I think a dedicated Handheld Gaming forum should cover Switch, Steam Deck, etc, etc

Don't see the point they either play PC games, or are consoles

This.

The point of a sub forum seperate to the existing needs to achieve something, but what?

PC section isn't hugely popular that threads get lost in it.

And on top, as pointed out above, they either play pc games so should be in the pc section, or play console games.

It'd be like having a section for Xbox, and then another for ps5

Maybe in the future as they get more popular (though imo they will never be massively popular)

A dedicated PC Handheld sub-forum is no less justifiable than the exist Laptops, Windows, Hardware and PC Games sub-forums.

I disagree with those that don't see a point, despite what things have evolved into with this forum, it's primarily a computer hardware resource.

It's not just about playable games, it's about the technology, which can be very different in the current and heavily growing market. I fully believe that should consoles survive in the long term that they will be offering similar tech solutions that might be different in regards to the Steam Deck for varying reasons. Overall it becomes a topic worth separating from general pc hardware.

Products like the deck aren't a trend, and copies are flooding the market because companies know that.

I was never interested in the Steam Deck until the likes of ROG Ally & the Lenovo Legion Go came to the market, now I have the Legion Go I literally can't put the thing down.

But they can be tricky to setup to get the best of them more so if you aren't PC savvy, like getting the happy medium between performance, power & graphics, having a sub forum would help a lot of people getting these things setup correctly if they need help with anything & tips & tricks game settings etc.

Edit

Also it just shows how popular handheld's are becoming when Intel have now started to creep into this market with the MSI Claw & the OneXPlayer X1.

But they themselves are not PC games. They are hardware, and don't really fit into any of the existing hardware sections.

Unless you're trying to argue we also condense all of the existing hardware sections into a single "PC Hardware" subforum?

It would be handy to be able to find hints & tricks for the steam deck without having to wade through the current 50 page thread to find it

We have a dedicated Virtual Reality forum - because that is distinct enough from both Consoles and PC Games forums.
But that makes sense because they tend to play games you can only use with VR headset, even if you can also play other games too with a VR mode or whatever...

theres no steamdeck only games? it's just a small PC with a battery

tell a mod to change this section

too "small form factor and portable computers like the steam deck"

Discuss the hardware in there and game compatibility.

any discussion about actual gaming,,, we don't have a separate thread for people who play on keyboard and mouse, then a second for people who play on controllers.
so use the standard gaming threads

Would you be happy to discuss VR in the Portable Computer section?

Afterall ... VR Headsets are just portable computers.
