Portable jump start battery pack

I have had this one for a few years. One of the best things I have even bought. Saved me many times by jump starting my cars, when the battery was so dead that not even central locking was working! It can also charge my laptop, while I am using it, even when starting from a dead battery as well as most devices up to 19v (comes with a varied selection of connectors). Absolutely fantastic and highly recommended.

That's some interesting stuff where they've put 400, 1000, 2000 and 4000 amps on the lithium battery packs.

They work because lithium batteries can provide power in a smaller package than the very space inefficient lead acid but I'd be amazed if they can prove an output of the advertised current from the lithium battery packs inside those.

Would not believe the advertising of cheap or unknown brands. Most likely won't achieve the ratings and many will just melt or explode under stress as proven by copies/fake Antigravity packs. If you get the xp-10 only get it from the UK distributor.

If you own lots of vehicles and some are hardly used I can understand the usefulness of one of these things but our 2 cars are driven almost daily and if we had starting problems I'd be looking at getting a new battery.

Other chargeable items I just charge up in the normal way, so I honestly can't envisage needing to use one of these things.

I had a flat more then once due to I left one or more the lights on by mistake...

My last car had the head light switch right where you would knock it to on or parking lights with your knee when getting out..:(

My brother has the NOCO one that you've linked to, although the 1k amp version. He's raved about it and says you can get plenty of jumps off a single charge. It looks well built/durable as well (hence the premium pricing over some of the others).

Point taken, that would be useful but I'd need to be inconvenienced by a similar situation first to make me buy one!

Most of the decent mechanics round here use the larger DBPower models. Pretty good by all accounts, many giving several good goes at starting large vans and even trucks.

Some people only drive short trips and don't give the battery enough of a charge.
Small and useful to carry on a motorcycle, as you can accidentally drain the battery on one of those very quickly. But also nice and compact to carry if, for example, yer mum has left her lights on or something.
But still, some battery faults give no advanced warning, especially in cold weather. We have them on the work vehicles, in case a job takes a touch longer than planned and the orange flashies use up more power than anticipated, or somesuch.

Does it not go ding... ding... ding... if you open the door with the lights still on?

A lot of the cheap li-ion ones are literally 3x 100amp max discharge cells (nominally sitting at around 4.05-4.2v fully charged) in series with no output protection at all. With 2000+ amp slapped on the label.

I have a medium priced one - its rated 500 amp - no idea what it can actually do for a brief burst without damaging itself but from a quick look at the internals it looks like the components are rated to around 280 amp output and claims it can start a 5-5.5L engine in reality struggles with anything much over 2L (also has a raft of safety features that appear to be the real deal).

I have this DBPower pack and it has started my 2.5 petrol and my wife's 1.6 petrol without issues.

It started the 1.6 instantly despite not being charged for a few months, although it did show empty after. So I think you need to keep them topped up.
