I'm off on my Crimbo holiday next month and I'll be taking the little Ixus 400 with me but it only stores 14 pictures at full resolution on a full sized 32mb Compact flash card..

What would be my best purchase, to store a large amout of holiday snaps..
More CF cards with bigger memory or some sort of portable hard drive..

I was originally thinking of taking the Laptop but want to travel a little lighter than that. (dive gear is going to blow most of my Kg allowance as it is)

Cheers

Buy yourself a 1GB or 4GB card and you should have plenty of space for pictures. 1GB would give you over 400 pictures which should be more than enough.

1GB cards are only £20 on OCUK so you could buy a couple and have plenty of space for pictures.

Is a CF card a CF card no matter what it's size?

Just worried about compatability issues that's all.

It should be as CF is a standard, the point of a standard being anything that complies to the standard will work with anything else that does. So yes any type should be fine.

Not necessarily. CF comes in two flavours, Type 1 and Type 2. The interface is identical on both but the Type 2 is thicker and hence needs a Type 2 compatible slot. I'd guess the Ixus will be type 1 only.

Type 2 cards are pretty rare these days, they're limited to microdrives and high capacity cards, anything 2Gb and under should be type 1 these days.
