Hi guys,

I have a portable passport 500Gb Western Digital hard-drive. I have quite a lot of stuff on there that works fine on my main pc. But as you do with a portable hard-drive, is use it on other computers.

I'm away from home for a while and the portable drive is playing up, not giving me access to all the folders I have on there.

I can access uni work, spss etc, but 3 out of the 5 folders are grayed out.
When i try to access them i get "you need permission to access this folder"

Now, I know how to resolve this if I was at home, and I usually copy the folder off the drive, and paste it somewhere else, and then copy it back onto the drive and this reset the permissions.

But...my problem is now, I dont have access to my main pc, so I'm stuck 80 miles away with a drive that I cant access videos, pictures and music.

Is there anyway to remove these permission rights it keeps asking for?

Hope you can help
Chris

taking ownership of the folder will probably work in the advanced menu of the folders security settings

That's allowed me into the folder, so we're getting somewhere, before it was refusing to open.

Now I can see all my video's etc, but they wont play. VLC giving a failure to read file error, so it seems im still being blocked some way.

Any ideas?

Thanks Cokecan!

EDIT

Cokecan, it seems for each file now I need to give it permission to allow the laptop I'm using to access it, but im happy with that.
As long as I can listen to some music and watch a few tv episodes I'll be grand.

Thanks again pal!

there should be a tick box that lets the setting propogate to all child files/folders, will save you having to do it on every file manually :)

EDIT: yeah, tick the box to replace owner on subcontainers and objects
