I decided to play through the first portal again so that I can roll straight into portal 2. It's a fairly fresh install on Windows 7. However, I get stuttering say every 4-5 seconds. I'm usually at the 299fps limit.

I've googled and seen a number of threads. I've tried a lot of the suggestions but nothing has worked so far.

Everything else plays fine, temps are on key.

I have:
3570K @4ghz
8GB Ram
Asus 6850 gfx card.

Would appreciate any support. It's annoying as hell.

Reinstall the drivers or try some different ones. It's likely one of those inexplicable things you may never fix unfortunately. Everyone has 'that game' that stutters no matter the hardware. When they churn out video cards and drivers more often than I change my pants, the concept of quality control and testing isn't exactly as robust as other industries.

My personal examples are Borderlands 1 stuttering all the time while Borderlands 2 is hitch-free, and Arkham City stuttering constantly even on low settings.

for me its the smoothest game ive ever played, so buttery smooth its better than any optimised console game

and im running stock 5850 with 1055T much less power and cost than your systems :D

the trick for me was ( as i had stuttering) was to change page pool memory y'know the cpu setting to LOW (you might not think your cpu needs that as its hardcore but it worked for me) , vsync, tripple buffer after this i got it down to just minor levels. the real finishing touch was to install MSI server and use the frame cap at 59fps

after this its perfect. do try msi server frame cap it works a treat on nearly all pc games and makes them run smooth like the consoles do

I';; try the page pool memory, I got Portal when it was free, 'cause they were handing it out to schools through Steam, havn't tried it in ages, thanks

One fix is also to try windowed full-screen mode. This fixes 99% of stuttering problems but won't take advantage of crossfire/sli setups. The OP has a single card so it's worth trying.
