Portal Prelude: Fully modded Prelude to portal out this week/next

Urgh, as much as there were better ways to express the rant, the ranter wasn't far off, this dude needs to learn game design. Building great levels is fine, but it doesn't make it a full mod.

edit: Urgh the level design is so frustrating. Talk about in at the stupidly deep end. Comments on the prelude forums give the same suggestions of frustrations. For example, in chamber 3 (highlight to see spoiler) the second panel that moves is a red herring, except I then found it hard to get the portal in a position on the first panel that won't result in me hitting it on my way through

At the end of the day though...it isn't exactly an official map pack / mod / expansion...So what can people expect really.

Nearly every mod I have downloaded over the last week for HL2 really has not been that amazing, but I just like the effort some people put in :) It's amazing.

I think the problem with portal, is yeah, it was awesome when it first came out...But it's been done now, so to make a better one it really would need some sort of direction / story for it.

For instance, I did like one of the map packs for portal that came out, as some of the levels did require you to think.

I've just downloaded this, so I'll give it a shot over the weekend hopefully :)

And regards to the email, yeah fine, you don't like it...But christ, no need to go off on one calling the entire thing carp now really...But as suggested, he probably was looking for a reaction...Or he's one of those people that is REALLY into gaming, and just loved portal THAT much.

thought that was a bit of a childish reaction from the creator, as i think he reacted in a way which took him to the complainants level.

im enjoying it and will give it some more play tonight but the bloke just needs to accept constructive criticism..

I appreciate the effort that has gone in, it just seems utterly preposterous to 'wake up' as a new test patient and walk into a test that kills you unless you move very, very fast as soon as you get out of the first portal. It doesn't feel even remotely 'right', just drags me out of the story they're trying to get you in to.

is that how you do the first puzzle ?

I must say ive been stuck on the first room for little while now :p i thought there was some fancy way to do it not just peg it :(

thats a bit lame :( are all the puzzles like that if so i dont think i will like it. Flash pack was great.
Quite well done for a mod but im worried the puzzles will all be as un-imaginative as this :(
So is the valve one going to be a prequel too ? man i want more crazy portal fun wheres that cake !

Well, I was looking forward to this too and in spite of playing through many third party map packs, this is the weakest. It's unbearably frustrating. I find it surreal that someone like me who has played through so many levels of Portal - some of them very difficult - should get stuck at the first level. There's no 'working out', no thought process, no ingenuity, just 'bottling it' till you make it through the sentries.

I'm at the start of level two at the moment and gave up after ten minutes of trying to make it over the gap.

Portal has always been about being able to progress to the next stage by working out the puzzles through logical and lateral thinking. It should not be about trying to figure out how the hell to get round the next corner.

For freeware I can't complain. I coulden't do any better! It is very hard though, which is fine, as it'll keep me busy up till Christmas

Took me about 20 minutes of seriously frustrated jumping to manage to get it down to the micro-fine precision needed.

It reminded me of back when I played the original Enemy Territory as part of a good clan. I was a reasonable player until someone sussed out the trick jumps and then the game just became about being able to pull off the trick jumps. The precision required wasn't something I was able to get a knack of, and ultimately just ruined the game for me.

Try it, what's the worse that can happen?
I'm currently in area 9 and after a half hour of frustration I gave up for the moment. I know how to do it but don't have the skillz it seems :)

looking forward to trying this out tonight, i found the Valve one a little easy so am looking forward to a bit of a challenge, hopefully not "too" frustrating :P
