I've recently finished uni and would like a website where i can upload some of my work. The problem is i am pretty useless when it comes to actually making a website.

I've been looking at 123 reg.co.uk and it looks as though i can buy the domain name i want, web hosting but also i can use pre-made templates to get a professional looking website quickly and easily.

Anyone have any experience using 123 reg and is it actually as simple as it sounds ?

Up until 2 week I would have said 123Reg were great. We've got about 750+ websites with them.

However....

They've changed their email program which simply isn't working at all, and as a result any new customers we've got can't have any email forwarding set up and likewise we can't change it on existing companies.

Once 123Reg resolve this problem (2 week without an answer is a LONG time in a company like this) then I'd certainly give them a recommendation, but until then, their service is down in my eyes.

would recommend tsohost.co.uk personally. Just google free css templates - but you can get some decent ones from oswd.org or freecsstemplates.com.

If it's a static site and you know html then it's a quickish job.

That's one of the benefits of being with someone who you can easily get hold of when there are problems. With respect to tsohost, I can't fault them at all. Have dealt with companies like heartintyernet, 1and1, fasthosts (totally awful support) and namesco (simply.co.uk) and all their support is awful. Namesco even apparently have a 48 hour turn around on email support - not very good when you have clients asking was xxx isn't working.

If you're good with Photoshop I'm sure you can knock up a mock website, then look at how to move that onto the web.

Totally agree, their packages are very reasonable but their support is top class.

Like most, if you take up a Linux hosting service with Cpanel you also get access to Fantastico which is a one click system for installing blogs/forums/contact forms etc.. very handy if your a first timer at this sort of thing.

This is definately worth looking at if your willing to spend a few hours.
You can create your own design on a PSD and follow a simple tutorial on how to turn it in to a functioning web site.
Its a pretty easy thing to do and something worth learning, it puts your own mark on the web, I found using a template to promote my work seemed a bit like a cheat.

Its just 2D graphics so posters and logos etc. Thinking i might not bother with my own website to be honest and just use imageshack or something similar instead.

Sorry for double post.
If your looking at something along these lines then maybe something like https://www.deviantart.com/

You can do it for free or upgrade for additional features if you find yourself getting enough traffic.
It will also give you your own URL to point people in the direction of your work

Example: http://judge.deviantart.com/ (link obviously not going to you)

Vidahost are pretty awesome, plus they have a lot of customers that use these forums. Very friendly people, super knowledgable and helpful, and seem to never sleep :p

My domain is with 123 reg, in the 6 years or so, but I am hosting the actual data on another/my own machine right now.

I use dotster for domain reg and anhosting / midphase stateside for websites, never had any problems really, be it shared or VPS.

Always used to find stateside based hosts much cheaper than UK ones, don't know if this is still the case or not though

That's definately one of the things that sets them aprt from other hosts.

Just got off the phone from Fasthosts support for a client and the difference between fasthosts and tsohost is huge. Looks like Fasthosts now have their support centers in America and their staff really don't know whats going on -E.g. she spent a good 10 minutes confirming what the problem was and then took another 15 mins to solve it, was also placed on hold 3 times during this time.

It nice to call someone from UK, not have to wait in a queue and get the problem solved. I've even sent an email to theior support at 1am in the morning and had a reply minutes later.

When you've had to deal with the support offered by places like mediatemple, fasthosts, simply.co.uk and heartinternet you really appreciate good efficient support.

BTW< I don't work for tsohost, just am a very satisfied customer.
