i have a belkin adsl modem/router, with its firewall disabled, as well as windows firewall disabled, and dont use any other AV or FW software anyway

i cant sign into msn at all, when i torubleshoot comes up with 'key ports' as the problem

also i cant connect to any server on IRC, seems like another port problem as when i tunnel through another PC elsewhere its fine

is there any way to check what ports i have open or closed, and how to open them??

i seem to remember a site, where they checked every port on your pc and told you if its open or closed etc, but cant seem to find it

thanks

Google for Shields Up. Think it's on grc.com.

Even with the firewalls disabled, the router is probably still in NAT mode meaning no ports will be forwarded to your PC unless you manually do it. With uPnP enabled, MSN will be able to add its own port forwards, but even without anything MSN should still work fine.

thanks, that was the site, tried it, and it examind the first 1056 ports, about 3 were open, ALL of the rest were closed

and just checked router settings, and yep firewall is off, but NAT is still on

is there any way to disable NAT so i can then try? cant seem to find it anywhere in the router settings

Unless it has bridge mode or similar, then probably not. It really should work without needing to open ports though - the majority of people on these forums use NAT, for a start.

If MSN etc aren't signing in, it sounds like it's blocking outgoing traffic rather than incoming. Can't imagine why it would be doing that though.

ok well its not router related, as another pc on my network which go through it can connect fine on everything...so its definately my PC thats blocking stuff...anyone got an idea how to sort it, without a format? :(
