Right, bit of a moan...

Went to see Thursday last night, who were brilliant again, but I've noticed a worrying trend in the recent gigs I've been too: Thrice/Coheed, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday.

There seem to be a lot of people going (mostly dressed in tight jeans, canvas shoes and sporting hair I can only describe as 'floppy') who are just there to be 'cool'. It's not that I have anything against them (well, maybe I do but that's another thread...) but there's been a definate lack of atmosphere which i can only put down to the people who stand around, talk, and generally look indifferent about the band. Except for TBS, I've seen all these bands (and more) before and there have been less people like that and the atmosphere was much better.

Anyone else noticed this or have any theories?

I realise that the only way to avoid it is to see less bands like that, but I won't be beaten away from bands I like by the scensters.

Interesting point about the creeping across genres, perhaps it's a disease?

Back in the day this never happened. When did going to a gig become a fashion contest?

when you had to justify your music taste with the clothes you wear. to be honest, this sort of thing used to bother me. and if a band's playing badly, my mind will wander and i'll start thinking about it; but i wouldn't avoid a band just because of the other fans.

edit: i just realised, please ignore my signature...it's a mick-take :)

Hehe, I was hoping it was :)

It's not going to stop me, I just hope the lack of intesity doesn't effect the performance of the band.

I'm glad they hadn't found Dredg when I saw them last...

We can put it down as coincidence for now... time may tell a different story though.

The support 'American Eyes' last night were awful, they may as well have been called 'Generic Emo Band #1057'. If only the scensters could latch on to bands such as these.

Not wanting this to descend into emu bashing (although that I would enjoy that)...

I blame the sheep mentality.

Go to ska gigs instead, everyone's dancing their norks off :D

Fair point. Although at a recent RX Bandits concert there were a disturbing number of the aforementioned Emu's. Now I know that they aren't strictly ska, but you must see that your beloved ska may also be at risk. ;)

Coheed are so not an emo band. And I thought the concept and lyrical content was some crazy storyboard comic strip gay thing (which I was handed at one of the gigs, and was like "wtf meight"), although if it's a crazy storyboard comic strip gay thing based around his ex, then maybe it qualifies. But I was understand the impression there was more depth to it than that.

It is a science fiction story based loosely around his relationship with his ex. Most of their recent album shows how things in his life moulded the happenings in the story.

As good as they are i wouldnt see them for the very reasons stated in Post 1. You need atmosphere or you might as well just listen to the CD at home.

That's a not a good reason, you're just giving in.
