Possibilty to add wireless to none wireless router?

Its just got me thinking. Suppose someone had a router but its not wireless and they wanted to add wireless nodes, like say a Laptop and a NAS, how would they go about doing it?
If there is such a way isn't it better as you choose how your wireless is going to be as apposed to bundling it in the actual router package.

buy a wireles access point, connct the access point to the router with the supplied patch cable, and bobs your uncle you have a wireless enabled router

(dont forget to setup WEP or WPA on the access point)
