Possible career in Photography...?

Following on from my recent photo shoot thread, and seeing the photos taken at the Liverpool meet, I've taken a real interest in photography.

Now I'm not sure how far I actually want to take this. Should I just make it a hobby, or try and make a career out of it over the next few years?

So which of you guys does it for fun, and which of you actually makes a living from taking photos? And how did you get to where you are now?

Any advice appreciated, although feel free to warn me off if its not a good idea :)

Think it's best to take it as a hobby first tbh, if you can get to know some people who are good at it you can learn from them, as it's definitely about getting the tricks of the trade right.

Join a local photography club or something, that's bound to help :)

Definately make a start with it as a hobby and see how it goes.

Start off by posting some pics here and getting us to critique them. Enter the competitions that we run and if you're close enough you're more than welcome to come to the next London trip that I'm going to start organising in a month or two. You can pick the collective brains of some pretty good photographers that way. Check out the last set of pics here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17544831

I'd say start out as a hobby too. See if you like it. Find what areas you like most and develop skills in them. Post here and we'll help you out. Most of all don't forget to enter the Photo comp. Its the single biggest aid you'll have. It forces you to get out there taking photos you wouldn't think of taking and helps those creative juices to flow.

some nice photos there

Definitely start as a hobby and see how it goes.

When you are confident, put a website or two up, find your trade, be it fashion, portrait, landscape, animal, wedding etc. and do 'jobs' for friends, or people you know.

Eventually, you'll amass a lot of contacts through referal, but grab any opportunity you have given, even to shadow for your local studio and so on and get contacts that way too :)
