President Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday a police helicopter had attacked the Supreme Court in a ratcheting up of Venezuela's political crisis, but a grenade tossed at the building did not explode.

Speaking on state TV, the 54-year-old president, who has faced three months of opposition protests and some dissent from within government ranks, said that special forces were after the "terrorists" behind the attack.

The helicopter had also flown over the Interior Ministry, he said. "I demand that the MUD (opposition coalition) condemns this eminently coup-mongering attack," Maduro added.

The pro-government Supreme Court is particularly hated by Maduro's opponents for its string of rulings bolstering his power and undermining the opposition-controlled legislature.

Earlier, Venezuela's leader warned that he and supporters would take up arms if his socialist government was violently overthrown by opponents who have been on the streets since April. At least 75 people have died in the unrest.

All rather worrying...

Ah, a strong contender for most inept government still in power prize, although for sheer longevity Zimbabwe beats it.

People protesting at no food in the shops are terrorists apparently. Everything is the fault of the Imperialist Yanqui's and/or the neighbouring states because its perfectly reasonable to have spent the budget at $130 per barrel prices for the last 6 years when you have no reserves and your only export of note is oil. His predecessor was a loon, but at least lucky enough that the cash was pouring in to support his bribe the people policies. Cancer took Chavez before he saw the consequences of not saving for a rainy day.

The BBC has something on it this morning: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-40426642

Unfortunately its going to get a lot worse before the Army stop propping him up.

Once your own military turns against you, you know your in the end game. From what I understand of the country over the last 15 years this could have been totally avoidable.

Yesterday, in Francia Square,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
I think he's from the CIA.

Surprised there is relatively so little in the mainstream news about this - by all accounts things aren't far off a tipping point in the country with increasingly escalating violence. For some reason videos of it are being removed from YouTube and the likes but alternatives sites like LL have them.

The helicopter attack was on bbc news a few days ago..

This thread is a few days old - but bunch of stories and videos coming out since of increasing escalations of widespread disturbances that have barely been touched on in mainstream press.

Venezuela...Poster child for the Corbyn wing of the Labour Party not so long ago.

There's a lesson there for the millennial brat meat-heads who want to see him as PM.

I guess this is one of the live leak videos that is safe to share on here:

edit - embedding it doesn't seem to work:

(warning, obviously if you explore other links on live leak you could find some very NSFW content, the below clip itself however is just a time lapse clip of protestors from a distance)

President Nicolás Maduro has thanked "the brave people of Venezuela" for voting in a controversial election for a new Constituent Assembly that will have the power to rewrite his country's constitution.

The election will allow Maduro to replace Venezuela's current legislative body -- the National Assembly -- with the new assembly, made up of 545 members, all nominated by his administration.
"We have a Constituent Assembly. I said, come hell or high water-- and hell and high water came -- and the Constituent Assembly arrived from the hand of the people, from its conscience," Maduro said, claiming victory.
The opposition boycotted the election as a fraud and has called for massive protests to begin again Monday.
There has also been international criticism of the vote, including from the United States, with the State Department on Sunday issuing a statement saying the elections were "designed to replace the legitimately elected National Assembly and undermine the Venezuelan people's right to self-determination."
