Hi Guys, I was hoping some of you may have some input on an issue I am having.

I am trying to resolve an issue with my missus's younger brothers PC, basically it keeps reporting the classic display driver stopped responding message whilst on the desktop, and when in games it develops the same issue with the occasional bluescreen shutdown.

The PC is an oldish dual core AMD system with a geforce 9800 of some description with 4GBram running windows 7 64bit, the PSU is a 450W Lepa series.

So far I have tried rolling back the drivers to an older version and even doing a clean install with older drivers, I think they were from January 2014 (I don't really know the versions of Nvidia drivers owning an AMD card myself)

Initially I thought it was just a bad batch of drivers but now my feeling is that the card is probably on it's last legs and needs replacing with something more modern.

Is there anything else I can try before I condemn the card to the WEEE bin?

CPU & GPU temps, checked for dust/old crusty TIM?

Could be anything inc PSU/GPU/System Memory.

Can you underclock the GPU a touch on both Core and VRam and see if its ok then.

I would test the card in another system first and also try another card in the older system if possible.

The 9800 is quite old I agree but I have a friend who is still running a 9600 with no issues on a similarly dated machine.

I have checked out the machine, its all dust free, and the fan seems normal, GPU-Z is reported temperatures up to 50c when I gave it a blast on furmark which blackscreened after about 30 seconds.

The CPU should be OK, I replaced the TIM on that not too long ago because it was getting a little warm but I'll have to run memtest overnight and see what happens.

I guess you are right I'll have to try it in another machine next and see what happens.

Well after some further investigation and putting the card in another PC it seems the 9800 has bit the dust, I couldn't even run 3D mark 06 without it crashing out or BSODing.

Anybody got any suggestions for a replacement with a budged of £50 (he's only 15 so this really is the most he can spend on a replacement).

Mostly used for minecraft and other light games up to 1680x1050, not necessarily on maximum settings bearing in mind he only has a 450W PSU and a 3.0GHz dual core Athlon II to pair with it.

I guess at this budget second hand is going to give the best results.
