Possible driver issue

Hey, I've got a lil bit of a problem.

For some reason, if I have any gpu drivers installed, this is what I get after I type in my password and log on:



However, if I uninstall the drivers and disable window's auto driver install, everything is fine (apart from the obvious caused by the lack of drivers).

Can anyone shed some light on this? I've tried new drivers, old drivers that used to work, windows default drivers, and I've also used drivers cleaners etc and installing in safe mode.

Asus 8800GT, the 512 version. Not over/underclocked, and never has been. Currently running windows 7 professional 64 bit aswell, if that helps

I've had the card for a while, what could have caused it to just go now?

Sadly, it's out of warrenty, and I have no other pc to test it with. Nor another card :/

Do you reccomend any cards in particular? I'm not really looking to spend more than £200 if possible. Could I get a new card with better performance than my 8800GT, that's still compatable with the 650i? I've been told cards that use pci express 2.0 are still compatable with pci e x16 v1?

I do have another monitor, I'll try it out later to rule that out. I'd prefer not to have to shell out for a new card if possible...

Well, I'm completely confused.

I tested a new monitor without drivers: worked fine. So, I reinstalled the lastest drivers from nvidia. New monitor works fine. Restarted several times to make sure.

So, I'm thinking this means it's the monitor. So, I try my old hannspree... and it's now working fine with these drivers. These are the same drivers that I tried using before to remedy the green fuzz, not even redownloaded or anything.

If it was a faulty cable, why would it only give me artifacts after log on?

And wouldn't it always give the artifacts, drivers or no drivers?

Because yes, I was using the same cable and moving it to the different monitor

Okay, so it happened again. This time, after I had left the pc on for a while.

I let it cool down, swapped over to a new screen, and everything was okay. I then tested to see what would happen if I ran something graphics card heavy: everything was okay until the game started to render, and it died.

Does this mean it could be a heat issue? So the reason it dies after log on is due to it having to process the background + windows areo etc etc?

Okay, so:

What kind of connectors will my psu need? I seem to recall the 8800GT uses a 6pin and an 8 pin (correct me if I'm wrong), and the GTX460 uses two 6pins. Will an 8pin - 6pin adapter work?
