Possible dumb slot compatability question.

Can one put a "Short" PCIe card (say a sound-card) in a "Long" PCIe slot (say a spare graphics slot?)

Not a dumb question at all, but yes you can - Any smaller card will work in any larger slot.

(Technically in most cases it should work the other way as well - larger cards will work in smaller slots if they can be physically fitted, e.g. making the slot open ended, as they should autonegotiate down from e.g. 16x to 4x or 1x)

As above, it'll work perfectly fine :)

Fun fact: Sometimes you'll find a 'long' PCI-E slot but only half of the slot actually has pins. This is referred to as a x8 slot, not found often on newer motherboards but it used to be the norm a few years back for boards with SLI/CrossFire.

Thankyou!

Had I fully appreciated this six months ago, I might have made different MoBo choices (Though I am reasonably happy with what I have got). Ho Humm
