It is 100% due to poor cf card insertion. He has done that himself.

Totally agree, classic case of user error.
 
Why on earth would someone be holding "small stones", or similar, in their hand just before putting a memory card in, and those stones, or a stone, just happen to fall into that small slot right at that time?

I have a pro-level slr and would never just happen to be holding a stone near the cf slot.

I reckon he did put in a cf card, but not the one you sold with it! This was one of his with a manky connector so the pin got pushed over and down. This was the buyers fault and this left a bad taste in the mouth, hence straight over to chasing some money back.

Typical Ebay tbh.
 
I was speaking to friend earlier who runs an electronics business. He said it is a well known scam.
They buy a high end DSLR that is sold as broken on Ebay/Gumtree or where ever for like £40, they then wait and buy the exact same model on Ebay, they then claim it is broken.

Ebay inevitably give them the money back, and even if the seller says return for a refund then they send the broken one.

My advice:
If you ever sell anything on Ebay take photos of the serial numbers/stickers and add them to your Ebay listing as proof.
 
True, but if you add your own photos on the ebay listing, rather than a generic photo from online, it at least gives you some leverage in any dispute if they claim a damaged item and try to return a different model.
That was the point I was trying to make, but you are of course correct.
Ebay is only interested in protecting buyers these days so any precaution you can take in anticipation of a possible dispute has to be a good thing.

One thing you could do, although it limits your buyer reach, is only offer local pick-up with expensive items like laptops, DSLR's etc.

Personally I do not use Ebay anymore, got sick of their increasing fees and the fact they put a lock on my funds when I sold about 12 items in a two week period, they made me wait 28 days before releasing the funds via Paypal.
 
I feel for you mate. I stopped selling on eBay after hearing horror stories like this.

It has been said already but do not refund him in cash if you go down that road.

Three possibilities:
1) You sent it with bent pins
2) He bent the pins
3) It's a totally different camera

Just saw this thread and was going to mention this :p

Fwiw, I broke the CF slot by stupidly putting a card in backwards (surprisingly with the design of CF it just fits in there) and I believe it only bent one of the pins but that made it completely unusable.
I tried to un-bend it but couldn't get it working, so decided to make it someone else's problem and buy a new camera which I wanted anyway :D
