Hi - despite my better instincts, I have sold a (what I believe to be) a perfectly decent VTX 7970 on ebay for a fair price - buyer has received it, and has tested it.

He's saying that he can't get it working across 2 monitors - each is fine individually, but he can't get it to output to both. Not sure at the minute quite how he's trying to do it, but the card has 2 display ports, one hdmi and one dvi. Has anyone had any experience of issues running over 2 screens?

Obviously I have marked and photographed the card extensively, but I don't actually think the buyer is trying it on, but I really don't want to get into returns and refunds, so any advice to pass to the buyer would be appreciated.

If he's using only 2 screens then he can use any connections, even passive adapters. The issues come when hooking up more than 2 screens. I would ask him to go into the BIOS. If that shows on both screens then we know it's a Windows or software setup issue. If the BIOS only shows on one then it indicates hardware - possibly dodgy cable?

Yeah, just been reading up on the active adapters, most people using them are trying to get eyefinity at big resolutions. He's said he's getting his local computer shop to get some extra mini-dp to VGA leads to check. Good idea about the BIOS, will ask him to confirm his setup and do that check when he gets back in touch.

Edit - just looked at my order history, bought it here in April 2012, wonder if there's still some manufacturers warranty if there is something wrong with it.....

Just been checking with the CS guys, and fingers crossed it should be covered, but the guy needs to send it back to me, then me to OCUK, and see whether there is anything actually wrong with it, and argue about the RMA fee if there's not!

Have also asked him to get back to me on the questions above, will update when he does. Hope it's summat simple......

Never again, must try harder to get to 1000 posts.....
 
Thats what I did with a guy who "claimed" a motherboard wasn't working, told him to send it back and i'd RMA it with the manufacturer and if there was a problem with it i'd send him the new one. You have to show you are bending over backwards to do the right thing and make sure you use Ebay messaging to send all communications so they can track it.
 
Bit of an update, guy has got back to me with the following.

We tried two different configurations.

1 - dvi to vga connector with vga to monitorA + hdmi to dvi connector with dvi to vga connector with vga to monitorB
2 - dvi to vga connector with vga to monitor A + miniDp to DVI connector with DVI to vga connector with vga to monitorB

Lke i said if we unplugged monitor A then monitor B would work or if we unplugged monitor B then monitor A would work. But never both together.

The bios splash screens only ever showed up on one monitor.

There is an minidp to DVI 'active display' connector supplied with the card (which i used in config 2) so i have ordered in to new to new leads (DVI to DVI and HDMI to DVI) to see if using less connectors/converters will help. Ill be trying them first with the minidp to dvi active display connector first.

Looks like he's trying to get to the bottom of it to be fair - any thoughts from any of you gurus? If it genuinely doesn't work, at least I can send it back here - the CS guys have been spot on with me so far, big thumbs up.
 
Spider senses definitely tingling over all those VGA/DVI connectors.

Perhaps the card "accomodates" the analogue VGA (DVI-I) signal out through the DVI-D connection by dissabling disabling the other port/digital output. (i actually thought HDMI and MiniDP are ONLY digital).

I.e maybe it can only output on one port at analogue.

Has the guy got DVI/HDMI inputs on his monitors at all?

Your fine doing DVI-VGA.
Doing HDMI-DVI-VGA or miniDP-DVI-VGA isnt going to work and this is almost certainly the problem.

There is a miniDP to VGA cable available but its an active adaptor. HDMI to VGA will also need something with circuitry inbetween to convert the signals.

Selling on eBay is fun isnt it!

Positive update!

Hi all, been having further discussion with my buyer, and it seems he's making progress. Looks like the issue might have been too many converters as discussed......


Hi Mat , good news. It finally seems to be working with the setup i described last time. I swapped the connectors around a few times and monitor B came to life and then when i plugged monitor A back in that worked as well.

DVI to VGA , VGA to monitor A VGA
Active miniDp to DVI , DVI to monitor B DVI

Ive done a few reboots and removed the cables and put them back and it all seems ok. It may have just needed to settle into the new configuration.

So ill give it a few days and see if it carries working on without a problem, fingers crossed all should be fine..

Fingers crossed by the weekend we're all done, will update again. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice, definitely helped the discussion with him
 
Convertors are fun.. :( Unfortunately this is going to continue in the future when graphics card manufacturers remove Analogue VGA from the DVI connection. ATI already do this on the latest Firepro cards.
 
You see, even eBay have decent people you cynics ;)

Its great that the buyer was very reasonable and worked things through with you.

Hi Matt, yes everything is looking rosy , the puter has had numerous resets and everything is stable.

So while it was a little nerve wracking for a time, in the end we're both happy. Thanks again to all those who contributed, and to anyone else who thinks ebay is all doom and gloom, sometimes it isn't!!
