I have a geforce 8800GT which appears to be causing me a few problems.

I've loaded the correct and recent drivers (64bit) which at first it recognises but after a re-boot (cold or warm) the basic video drivers are loaded, not the Nvidia ones.

Looking in device manager, it state "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) "

So, as a further test, I replaced the card with a spare 7600. This works fine and uses the same driver set.

Does this sound like a borked card?

btw, this is after a fresh install of windows x64

Starting with the obvious (sorry) have you installed the motherboard drivers after the fresh install of win64.
Go into device manager, expand the "Computer" and right click the ACPI Computer, and choose "update driver software" -> "browse my computer..." -> "let me pick from list...". Then choose the only other option that is available, which should be Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC

done

I had same thing, install an older version of drivers first then install latest ones.

also done.. using 180 drivers

Ok, a BIOS flash seems to have rectified the above problem. the drivers load and i'm able to perform some testing. However, I now get a new problem.

Black boxes appear all over the screen? I'm still not convinced the card is working?
