So do I need to buy a wireless card for my pc and then connect the ps3 to the pc through the wireless then the ps3 will somehow share the pcs ethernet internet connection?
No there is no router. Its just an ethernet port in each room of the house. Also you have to register your mac address via an online form to get on the university network, this is only possible on mac's or windows based pc's so I cannot connect my ps3 directly to the network. Ive contacted the uni IT dep. and they said it is possible to use my ps3 on the network but the only way to do it is if it shares my pcs connection.
if your PC has two ethernet ports on your pc you can bridge between the two, however I'm not sure whether that would make them share the same IP. I had the same problem last year, ended up selling my 360.
It only has one ethernet port, And no spare pci slots, so I was wondering if I could get a card with two ports on it possibly? or a wireless usb device to bridge the ps3 and the pc maybe?

I have the same situation at uni....one ethernet port in the pc and one ethernet wall socket.
I bought a USB to ethernet converter (only a few quid), connected the PS3 to the USB converter, and then the PC from ethernet socket to wall socket, works fine.
Remember to register your MAC address on whatever site that provides your internet and you're good to go.
ok ive bought a usb to lan stick. Now I have the computer plugged into the ethernet port in the wall and my ps3 plugged into the usb to lan on the pc. Whats the next step so that the ps3 shares the connection??
Sorry but I think you have all missed pretty much the easiest way to do this:
Cheapo cable router (Linksys WRT54G for example) plug the wan port into the port in your room and clone your PC's registered MAC into the router, saves faffing around with all this ICS ****. I had this setup two years ago when I was in Uni accomodation and it worked flawlessly. No need to leave your PC on either if you only wanted to use the PS3 and you can also have wireless for any other devices you might have.
All sorted now, ps3 is fully connected to the network, i just need to work out what ports fifa 08 uses or ea servers use so I can unblock them on the uni's firewall.
