Behind you... Naked!
A while ago, I bought a Gigabyte Z270 Mobo, and chucked in an ATI 7770 Card.

Now, the 7770 card, seems to be a love for me, as I have a load of them in various PCs... I have the MID sized ones and 2 stubbies, and I guess I just went nuts on them as they are, for me, absolutely rock solid cards that are not power hungry and yet play everythign I throw at them ( Even if a bit dated now ).

But anyway, a while back I swapped out two of them in this board, for a single 380 that had been in my SabreTooth 990FX that was running great, however I had a few issues, hanely the PC would just seem to poo itself and the screen would turn green abd the thing would blow of like some raspberry siren.

In then end, I threw in a pair of the 7770 cards again, and then after a while, I went back down to one.

I dont play much heavy games anymore and so I have no need to get a high end card... I do play Dawn Of War games and a few mid end games, but nothing that needs me to waste money on a high end card.

Anyway, calling myself a lair, I bought a 580 a short while ago, and it seemed fine, but then it too would on occasion, drop trou, and lay a steamy one, and I just cannot understand why?

Again, this card has gone into another PC and its doing fine.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, I bought a 660ti for one of the Linux PCs and I have been using that in there and its been rock solid, but I have now converted that to a different type of PC ( Im not mentioning the type ) and I am using the onboard and so that 660ti, being sat there, I put into this PC, and I imediately noticed that when playing Dawn Of war, ( SoulStorm ), when scrolling across the landscape, it was jerky as hell.

I did not have the latest drivers, and so I got those, but now, I am noticing that the game sort of does not pause, as such, but it does go nuts with the dirty raspberry phart sound for a fraction os a second, as if its about to crash.

Thism, I could not stop, and so I have quickly stuffed in a 7770 card again, and lo and behold, everythign is running smoothly and solidly again.

The 660ti is now in the Gigabyte Z170 and its rock solid
The 580 is in the Asus SabreTooth and that too is rock solid
The 380 is in an AsRock H77 and that too, is perfect

It seems that this Z270 Mobo does not like half decent cards?

Is that a known thing, or does my Mobo simply have issues?

I have just had a thought, but I have NOT tried the second PCI slot... I will give that a go tomorrow..

Have you checked if a more recent BIOS provides any GPU comparability fixes? Can you boot a clean windows install and install latest drivers/confirm if it exists in that scenario? Also PSU?

BIOS = Latest. I dont usually think of this, but this is one that I did check.

Booting a clean install. I will confess, that this install might be due for an overhaul... I have always reinstalled windows every so often, definitely never had an install for longer than about 6 months, and even then there will be a reason for it, but this install I did over 3 years ago... I know that cos thats when I bought the Mobo... Maybe its time for a fresh install?

PSU = No, I have changed the PSU not that long ago, and it did it on the previous one too! - The Server had a 1000w Corsair and this had the 1200w and so I swapped them over.

Ill do a fresh install cos the USB has a few niggles sometimes too, with not being able to recognise phones or tablets and more recently, an old iphone 7

Yup fresh install would rule out any old driver conflict.

If the one thing all the newer GPUs have in common is that they are heavier than the 7770? Then it could also be weak PCIe slot/s on the motherboard or something. And some form of support might fix that.

Any driver conflict is quite a weird ( but as we all know, never impossible ) issue, because the issues I have, are with not opnly newer cards, but als owith both ATI and nVidia cards...
One small test I did, was to run an older nVidia card, and that card ran just fine. The board supports both SLI and XFIRE and so I tried both... SLI with a pair of 470GTX Cards and XFire with a handful of 7770 cards.

I also tried xfire wit ha pair of ATI580 cards for a giggle, as I had them on my main PC for a while and again, the issues I only had were total failure with the 380 ( Thats 380 not 580 ) where the screen went green, and the serious glitches and almost crashing with the 660ti and yet the pair of 580 in xFire and the 470GTX in SLI were both seemingly fine..

This now contradicts the thought of the Mobo having issues with newer cards as the 580s are my newest cards.

That said, while these cards are all weighing in at a high end, ,they are all different weights and so the possibility that they need to be fit in 100% right, is one that I can double down on, and make sure of.

But never the less... I am definitely going to reinstall.
