Alright, so I have a dilemma. I'm going to be building a gaming rig in the next month or so and I'm basically trying to find out what hardware I'm better off getting. The parts that I have nailed down for certain are as follows:

8Gb (2x4Gb) Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz
128Gb or 256Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD
SeaSonic M12II 650W PSU
BitFenix Colossus Venom Case

Are there any parts you see there that could be replaced with better parts? Anything you wouldn't really recommend?

As for the parts that I'm undecided on, I have the choice of either these:
Intel i5 3570k
Asus P8z77-V
GTX 660 Ti

Or these:
AMD Fx8350 Black Edition CPU
Asus M5a97 Revision 2 Motherboard
2GB XFX Radeon HD7870

What are the thoughts on using these for gaming? Which one is going to be better? General thoughts on the builds?

Thanks for your time.

are you ever going to use more than one video card?

as

Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77
Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77

1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £85.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £82.99

are great boards, overclock well and for the price are very good, have one myself and is stable as any tbh @ 4.5 and above depending on cooler

unless you need or want to pay more for something you may or may not use etc, there nothing wrong with choosing either of them

im not knocking Gigabyte above either, as both are better boards if you need it, but cost more also, if you don't need the extra bits these Asus ones are just as good

Can't comment that much on the AMD CPU build as I'm not that familiar with it but I run the i5-3570K on a P8Z77-M [mATX board] with a 670 and it hasn't flinched on any titles at 1920x1200, so personally I would recommend the Intel build - don't see any problem with the P8Z77-V but the Gigabyte boards are also worth a look and often a tad cheaper for a comparable spec.

I did favour the GTX over Radeon because of BF3 and I bought at launch when the AMD drivers weren't great. Now I think AMD have all but caught up with driver improvements so at this moment in time I would probably get an AMD card with the good bundle of games they are offering up. If your budget can stretch to it I might opt for a 7950:

This MSI is £225 which is the range of some of the 660 Tis

I also have the Samsung 830 and 840 SSDs and both tick along quite nicely!

The Z77-D3H is a better board, even 8 pack says its the only choice in the budget range.

not everyone likes Gigabyte boards, and as asus overclock well, im happy with what i've got, budget board or not, it does what it says on the box and support is great, im a asus gold club member and have 200+ m/b in my profile so far, so will stick with them and spec them also, until OC stops selling them and stops using them in most of there builds and bundles, then i'll go elsewhere, until then im happy to keep on spec'ing them no matter what or who or anandtech says on it.

i also said it was a better board above quote " im not knocking Gigabyte above either, as both are better boards if you need it, but cost more also, if you don't need the extra bits these Asus ones are just as good2 etc

please dont think im knocking you or 8pack either, i respect you both as you both have done loads more than i do and i enjoy and read both of your stuff, but i dont buy into anyone thing is the best for everyone, i like choice no matter what, and this is what OC gives me.
