Possible GFX/PSU issue?

Hi Everyone

Recently upgraded my gfx card from a HD7850 2GB to a R9 390 8GB

Everything appears to be fine, games run full settings etc.

But after about 10/20 minutes from the PC being turned on I start to hear a very high pitched tone that will continue until the PC is turned off.

It definitely sounds to be the lower back end of the case, my Antec 850w has been fine for many years, could the gfx card upgrade be having an effect on the psu (drawing more power etc) or could the pitch be coming from the card itself?

I cant distinguish (by putting my ear next to both) between the psu and gfx for the tone and unfortunately I have sold the old card now.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Russ

Sounds like coil whine. Some GPUs suffer from it, although I believe it's normally a combination of the PSU and GPU (The whine might not happen using a different PSU).

Is it common to have coil whine while idle?

Everywhere I've read, ppl suggest it comes after intense gameplay, but mine seems to start 10/15 minutes after the PC boots.

When I got my 980ti I did some 3dmark benchmark tests and the sound I got from the card was absolutely horrendous. It was so loud and squeaky, but I've never had it once in games or in idle. I don't think you'd get coil whine in idle, so not sure what's going on with yours :o

Maybe my understanding of coil whine is wrong then.

Ever since I updated my GFX card from a HD7850 to a R9 390 after about 10 minute of the PC being on I start to hear what I can only describe as the noise you hear right after a flashbang.

Just a very high pitch frequency, it doesn't hurt the ears but its quite noticeable.

It hard to determine whether its the card or possibly the extra stress on the PSU?
