Hi guys,
I have a HiS Radeon 6870 and think I might have a problem with the card, and therefore would like some input to see if I can confirm this.
Ok, the 6870 is not over clocked, and thereby is running at stock setting. However, at stock settings I get a lot of tearing. I have had this problem since November, and probably should have sent the card back, but with it being right in the middle of the university year, I was reluctant to be without a working PC for the duration of the RMA. So, having finished university I now want to address this problem.
A little bit of information about the problem is that when I play videos I get little blue lines such as:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Across the video, but only on the video. Another problem is that there is a little tearing in game, specifically in world of warcraft, it is very minor. However, when I play a youtube video in the background then the tearing is significantly worse, i.e. 100 times worse, to the point where the game can not be played. Lastly, the tearing or artifacting is like a smudge, and in the smudge is an afterimage of a what used to be there. Strangely, this only happens on the Windows 7 Desktop, and does not happen anywhere else.
I did do some research into the problems, I ran a ram test, and it passed, a gpu test, it passed, and a gpu memory test, and again it passed. This is where I should be sending the PC back, but the thought of 3 weeks without a PC is not good. Especially as I now have a backup GPU, so if I can identify the GPU as the problem I will just RMA the GPU.
After about 3 months of an hour here and there I stumbled across a thread that said something along the lines of increasing the GPU voltage. I have done this and to my surprise it worked. The stock voltage is at 1174 in afterburner, and at 1187 the tearing goes (the tearing or artifacting seems like a smudge/afterimage). The problem is that periodically the tearing comes back, and slowly I am having to increase the voltage to stop the tearing. I.e. I am now at 1187, whereas previously 1181 did the job, but not it still tears at that setting.
So, I am basically here hoping to get your input, and recommendations, is it worth living with afterburner running for all-time, it is pretty annoying.
Cheers,
Steve.
PS: I have installed, removed, and literally feel like I could write a dissertation on AMD drivers for the time I have spend on them. What I am trying to say is that I don't think it is a driver problem
